Sore = Hungry For 2 Days

I have noticed when I push my workout enough to get pretty sore (running) I am RAVENOUS the next couple of days. Is this normal - is my body just "feeding" muscles that were overworked? I try to step it up every couple of weeks with my workouts but the fallout over the next couple of days is brutal....lol. I'd love to hear what any of you have to say about this.
