Might as well be asking Flintstones versus Spongebob.
Two very different bands playing very different music at different times.

    Fair, but.........

Both are often spoken of as the greatest rock band of all time. Not only does answering the question give an indication of which band one prefers, it gives an indication of which type of rock they prefer without the the risk of being superfluous.

Then again, the Beatles can be broken down into 2-3 different stages. Let's go with 1967-70 here.

Breaking down the Beatles into 3 categories? I see what you mean but come on! Both are great but again, Beatles hands down.

1962-1966 Beatles and 1967-1970 are very different.

Transition period happened around Rubber Soul/Revolver.

Based on just music...I dunno. Too hard of a choice.
But I (and my kids) enjoy the Beatles' cheeky cheesy movies as well. That might tip the scale for me in their favor.

Beatles, much more well-rounded and versatile. Three great musicians.

As a lifelong Zeppelin FANATIC, I'd have to believe each member (singlularly) was likely more accomplished in his particular specialty than his "Fab Four" counterpart. While I would personal chose Zeppelin as the "better" of the two bands (when considering overall music creativity, style, diversity, etc), the notion is purely subjective and arbitrary......as they were contemporaries in neither timing nor genre.

Well, who would you pick? This seems to be a popular debate.

I am going with the Beatles to get it started.

This is almost an impossible choice.

If I had to pick though I would roll with Led Zep.

    Can I pick neither?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that your music taste may suck.

Beatles are overrated, usually by people who smoked a little too much during that era, or people who want to prove how 'with it' they supposedly are by judging music on x, y, or z scale rather than actual enjoyability. Ditto the Rolling Stones. Overrated.

Led Zeppelin had a few good songs, but I fall asleep if I try to listen to a whole CD by them.

I need my rock to have a little more energy.

However they did inspire many to become musicians, form bands, and help the evolution of music, much as we see today. For that they should receive credit. Maybe you should give up smoking
