Eating during an Ultra or really long runs

I am doing my first 50k on March 9 and will probably be about 7 hours on the course I am guessing I will be eating real food. That is an long time without food even if you do not include the running 31 miles. Can someone recommend different things I could try on my long training runs? I have done peanut butter on tortillas and been ok. I would like to find some type of bar to carry but I am not sure if I need it to be a protein based or carb based bar? Any suggestions?

If you go into the groups section there is an Ultra Runners Group that might be able to help you out more than the general MFP population. I ran a 10 mile trail race attached to an Ultra last Feb, and no joke, at the aid stations the 50Kers were drinking beer and eating M&M's.0

My staple during my 50 milers was PB&J with whole wheat bread. Mix of carbs and protein that worked for me. Reality is we're all an experiment on one. you have the right idea, try different things in training. Personally I found that bars and such didn't work well. Fueling on the 50 milers was logistically easy since the races were run on loops of roughly 4 miles. On a large loop or out and back course I might have had to find a different strategy.0
