Crunches / Sit Up Help

Yes stupid question coming. I know.
At the gym I use the Abs roller thingy-ma-jig (not machine, just the roll type cage with headrest if you get me) and do standard, side, and vertical leg crunches. However, I've started an app that gives you an Ab Workout, but they hurt my neck. REALLY bad. It's not that I'm pulling my head with my fingers, it's like I'm tensing my neck when doing it, or as if my necks is in the wrong position.
I'm in mega pain now.
Please can someone advise what to do....without laughing at my stupidity :blushing:
