Eat too much one day, work out more the next?

Is this helpful at all? I am on the road for business today and I know I am going to go over my limit without any chance of exercise. If I exercise tomorrow to cover what I overate will it compensate?

I believe in meeting my calorie goal on a weekly rather than daily basis. Try to make good choices today as far as possible and exercise a bit extra the next few days to balance it out if you can!

Yes I work on a weekly basis as well. But I am ok with very slow loss. I am a "lifestyler" not a dieter.

Agree with this, your body does not have a clock, weekly calories works fine within reason, ie do not starve 6 days & pig on 1, but a bit, or a lot over on one day will sort itself out in the long term

I go for weekly as well. It's been working for me :-) I shoot for my daily goals, but often make up for overages the next day. Today will actually be balancing out my terrible Monday.

You have to be able to go over sometimes and not feel guilty about it. I'm not saying it's ok to be a glutton whenever you want. I am saying you need to have the ability to stay focused on the big picture and the little things will take care of themselves.
Nobody is ever going to be perfect 24/7. The sooner you realize that and accept it, the easier this gets.
Everyone's advice to look at your weekly goal is spot on too. That's what I do as well. There are times when I go over my calorie goal for a day, but I always try to stay under my maintenance calories. Sometimes (rarely) I go over those as well, but that's ok. It all balances out in the end.
  • So I actually just read an article that clarified if you eat a little bit over one day and a little but under one day your body will never think it's not getting enough food and you'll never go into that dreaded "starvation mode". I'm not sure I totally believe the whole "starvation mode" thing anyway but the concept that a little over and a little under should keep your body knowing that food is regularly coming and that shedding some of the extra fat is a safe thing to do does make a lot of sense. SO rather than beat myself up for too much yesterday (but somehow I really NEEDED a burrito after working out yesterday -- ugh) I'm just planning on being under today and making sure that my weekly graph always stays just under that little red line :)

@Kirsten, it's called calorie cycling and yeah, it's a pretty legit way to break plateaus and keep losing or to jump start weight loss when you have stalled. At least for me.

Hurrah for learning new things and HAZAH for getting to over eat sometimes and ballancing it all out!
