Switch from full-body to split workouts? Ladies...help.

I've been lifting weights for about a year and a half and gained a lot of strength. I started with NROLFW, and have been improvising workouts since then for the most part, but I'm starting to think that in order to develop more strength, especially upper body (my 2013 goal is to do a %@#% pullup), I need to do a more focused split routine.
However, I cannot imagine doing deadlifts and squats on the same day (maybe I'm being a wimp?), and I want to keep both in my routine.
A full body workout is really tough for me to do more than twice a week...I'm sore for days after. I'm also old...give me a break. I'm willing to workout 3 times a week, but I think I need to rearrange my routine to do that.
Any suggestions about how to organize my workouts for more focus and energy? Thanks gang. Please don't be mean.

I'm wondering this too. Sometimes it seems natural to me to work the front of my body one day, and the back of my body the next day. Other times I think it should be upper body, mid body, lower body. And still other times I want to just do my favorite exercises one day and ignore my least faves, lol.
I'd like to know if there is 'right' way.0 -

Oh ooops. I was searching the database and this thread came up first. I didn't see the other one. Thanks.0

Gym trainer says to swap out areas every other day so muscles have a day to relax. If you do a full body workout, rest the next day.0
