Aspartame Headaches

After eating 80% clean for the past week, I had a piece of gum yesterday and had a headache almost instantly. Today I decided to indulge a bit and have a diet coke. Again, a headache almost instantly (had to throw half of it out). I've been a loyal diet drink consumer for about 10 years and never experienced headaches till now.

I'm well aware of the studies done on the side effects of consuming aspartame, this is just the first time I'm personally experiencing them.

Anyone else with similar experiences?

Anything with aspartame makes my mom super nauseous, but that might be because it tastes terrible.

I cut out diet coke for about 8 months (I'm pregnant) and recently started to have one on occasion. I've noticed that after I drink one (caffeine free), I get a pounding headache...but it doesn't happen with a regular coke.

Doubtful. Dirty diet, dirty headaches. It's our creator's punishment for creating things ourselves.

Here's a link to aspartame side effects. I was an avid diet soda drinker til I read about it. You can't find gum in the store now without it. I get my gum at the health food store or online from Amazon.com who still has the original Dentine cinnamon WITHOUT aspartame. Good luck.

I disagree. The symptoms are very real and documented.

NOO They are not just in your head.

I have had a neurologist since 2009. Aspartame is a neurotoxin. It causes migraines. Google it.

Diet coke with the yellow ribbon it is made with splenda instead which doesn't cause it.

Trident has packages marked made with Xylitol. That is not a neurotoxin either.

Aspartame, on a cellular level, acts as formaldehyde. It pickles you.

With that, I also have a severe sensitivity to aspartame. I have had migraines most of my life (the earliest my mom remembers was age 4, when I asked her to cut my head off because it hurt). Aspartame is a trigger.

The best thing you can do for yourself is continue the 'clean' diet. If you want a soda, drink regular. It has more calories, sure, but it's MUCH more natural than drinking formaldehyde.

I have this ALL THE TIME. I avoid all things with aspartame or phenylalanine. This is why I DO NOT drink diet sodas and drink normal soda if there is only soda available much to the disapproval of those around me who know I am trying to lose weight.

I discovered my problems with the artificial sweetener when I was a teen. I was trying to lose weight and wanted to work on eliminating sodas, but I'm weak. I fell in love with Lime flavored diet coke. It took me a few weeks but I noticed I was constantly having major headaches and right before I STOPPED the diet sodas, starting having breathing problems.

To see if that was the cause I stopped drinking the diet sodas as it was the only thing I could find that was different. I didn't have issues anymore.

Ever since I notice I get the same thing with stuff that has aspartame (nearly ALL sugar free drinks). I want to point out that Coke Zero (or any of those other zero drinks) have the same stupid ingredient as diet soda, so I don't find the difference.

Anyway, all that to say you're not the only one and NO you're not imagining it.

I take awful reactions to aspartame and MSG (monosodiumglutamate) - I feel really awful if I ever take them. You are not alone.

Snark aside, it's one of my migraine triggers. Honest to goodness. Artificial sugars and milk chocolate (Waaahhhhhhhhh! I know).

If it gives you headaches I would try avoiding it and see if the headaches stop. As for the rest of the claims and junk science in this thread, yikes.

Even if this one headache is pyschosomatic do yourself a favor and never ingest that vile poison again. I'm tired of people defending artificial sweeteners and telling those of us who abstain from them that we're paranoid hippies. No, it won't kill you instantly but it's not natural and the body does not like it.

That's really interesting. Do you notice it with just things with low-cal sweeteners like aspartame or do you get the same way with things like corn syrup?

Do you know what aspartame is, chemically?

I try my hardest not to eat aspartame. I have noticed it gives me headaches. But then again I was prone to migraines for a while and am working on that very successfully at this time. I don't like "fake" anything really. Just because something is low fat, low cal, etc. does not mean it is "good for you."

It's not like anyone is forcing you to consume it, or even suggesting that you *should* consume it. Sounds like you need other people to believe you to make you feel better about your own convictions.

I don't claim to be a chemist so no. However I'm pretty certain that you can't go get aspartame from an aspartame plant.

no problem with real sugar, corn syrup, raw sugar, etc. but other sweeteners give me migraines. so far i havent found a "sugar free" product that doesn't give me a headache. but then i get headaches from most fruit, msg, onions, garlic, perfumes and cologne, strong smelling flowers. really too many to list. so sometimes its hard to pin point what triggered the migraine. too bad fat and carbs dont do it to me lol.

    yup...harmless...that's what it is...
Now warm it up to say...oh...i dunno...98 degrees Ferinheight ...wait...is one of those things it breaks down to...formaldehyde?

    What is your body temp?

So some folks may call it junk science...but I see no reason to give embalming a head start.
  • Even if aspartame is completely safe to consume, it does not mean it will not trigger migraines in certain people. Those of us who get migraines from aspartame know this full well and will avoid it like the plague.

    LOLz
Formaldehyde is also produced naturally by your body, and it's easily broken down and excreted.
Why u so scared of chemistry?

Your body already produces formaldehyde which breaks down into formic acid via alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme in the liver.

I don't care whether or not you drink diet soda but your logic as to why you should avoid it, is off.
