help me understand

im new to this site. only 12 days in. when i signed in, it allows me 1400 calories. everyday i have done and hour or more exercise on my elliptical and it nets me calories. im trying to lose weight. so everyday for the 12 days i have lost weight sticking to the 1400. but i have seen some people go over in calories by a ton and still lose weight? where do you draw the line in going over your daily allowance and still lose weight?

Some people have calorie allotments that are way too low. Or they may not be logging exercise. My friend for a while had a calorie allotment of 1200 but that was extremely aggressive and he could have easily gone over that and still been in a deficit.

What is a ton and for what duration? Weight loss isn't linear and sure you can eat over maintenance once in a while and still lose weight. Over maintenance can be 500 or 600 calories for some people or it can be 1500 if their being agressive in their calorie restriction. It's loss over the course that's important, not what someone might eat on a particluar day.

Knowing what BMR and TDEE is can help you understand this a little better.
If you workout every day for an hour that could be considered a moderate to active lifestyle.
Your TDEE is probably between 2k-2600.
That means that anything below 2k-2200 you can lose fat/weight.

I allow myself to go over once a week or so but not crazy over. Be good way more than your bad! I just dont want to be a calorie Nazi. I want to change the way I look at food.

How are you figuring your calories burned?

You should be NETTING the 1400 calories. Not just eating it and then burning it all off through exercise.

for example. today. it starts around 1400 im allowed and then jumps up and says i net 1,567 calories in exercise. so when i go into my food it says i have 3,027 as my goal for the day? to still continue to lose weight, am i ok still eating only 1400 calories to lose weight? is it going to catch up with me and not be enough calories?

i have seen some women on here that do a LOT of exercise and then eat well over 2,000 calories and still lose weight. that is why im curious as to how they can do that?

This site includes a deficit in the calculation if you selected weight loss as your goal. If it says you can eat up to 3027 for the day, that still includes a deficit. Some people believe that the site over estimates calories burned by exercise and therefore will only eat back half or so. That would still allow you to eat 2500 calories and still lose weight. Hope that helps.

Read the link in Helloitsdan's post. It's not clear to me what your numbers represent - is 1400 your BMR or your recommendation to eat if you don't do any exercise? What did you set your activity level at and why? Are you saying you burned 1500 cals in a workout, if so how are you measuring that?

No you should not be eating that much below your TDEE, you will not get a balance of all the nutrients your body needs for health, repair and refuelling eating half what is recommended. Exercise substantially increases your need for every nutrient not just overall calories.
