Accurate calorie counts

I have been here a week and already am suspicious of the calorie counts on many foods in the database -- particularly for the ingredients in a recipe (ie not one scanned into the database.)
Is there another recommended source (website and apps) of of nutritional information on basic ingredients (onions, apples, spinach) -- especially a calculator that I can enter the weight of the item and get the calorie count?

This is a link to the USDA nutrient database. Their counts are about as accurate as you're going to get.
These counts can be found on MFP though. Just look for entries in the data see that don't have a star in front of them.0 -
Great, thanks!0

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have noticed calorie counts for certain foods that have their calorie counts on the package label still entered in wrong.0
