HRM overestimating calories burned?

I have today bought a crivit sports HRM and after completing week 1 of C25K it tells me I have burned over 800 calories! Am I correct in assuming that this is grossing over estimating? The HRM has a chest strap, which I used. Any idea what it's more likely to be?
Any help very much appreciated!

That does seem awfully high. I'm not familiar with that HRM - does it allow you to enter your stats - age, gender, height, weight, etc? Did you happen to look at the watch during your workout - any crazy high readings or was it steady and tracking your heart rate properly?0

It did require age, height, weight etc. Unfortunately, I didn't keep an eye on my heart rate (not that I'd know what it was supposed to be). I bought it from Lidl - dirt cheap! Maybe I just need to invest in something decent!0

That does seem really high but if you are really out of shape it could be possible for close to an hour workout... IDK how long C25K is though.
I have a Polar brand HRM and I love it. It usually puts me way higher than typical calculators.. but I tend to keep my HR above my 'range' and I think that's why...0 -
Unless you are massively tall, and massively overweight then that is way over! I'm also on wk 1 - I'm 5'6 and 182 pound, 43, female - my HRM has recorded c 224-226 calories for both 33 min runs - at the peak of each run I was at 172bpm, and during the walks around 140. It pretty much matches my treadmill's thoughts ;-)0

That's what I thought Amanda! I'm current 220lbs and very unfit, but I don't see how I burned THAT many calories. We're going for a walk later so I'm going to use it again and see what it tells me.
thank you for your help everyone

make sure it accounts for gender. I had one that i returned because it was counting as though I were a man,w hich I am not. i have the polar ft4, which accounts for weight, age, height , and gender.0
