Can you use an HRM while stregth training?

I was on another thread yesterday, and someone mentioned in passing that you can't use an HRM when strength training. Is this true? It never occurred to me before that person said it, and I was planning to use my Polar FT4 when I did NROLFW.

I've been using mine for nearly 3 years now and I primarily do weight training as my form of exercise. People say that because the logistics and algorithms that are set up for HRM are more accurate at higher than normal heart rate. IMO as long as you are working your butt off while you are strength training and weight lifting and keep your heart rate above 115 I think this is just fine for use with a HRM and will give you a fairly accurate number of calories burnt.
I look at it this way: if people use it to WALK with and keep track of their calories, I know damn well that my heart rate is higher when I am weight lifting than it is when I am walking. So I do not see where it makes any sense that people would say that it is not accurate when weight training.0 -
It depends on what kind of weight lifter you are.
If you are one of those who spends several minuts hanging out,staring into space or chatting with friends in between sets, your HRM numbers might not be very accurate. If you are constantly pushing yourself with VERY MINIMAL rest in between sets, Then you are pretty safe to count it as accurate. I usually take off about 25% calories burned just in case. Also, Walking around in small circles in between sets instead of sitting on the machine might help too....0 -

During my half hour of strength training I wear it to no ill effects, also there's a couple of weight lifters /boxers /highly weight and resistant training gents that all wear theirs (my gym has a system were they display the HRM rating on screens). All the trainers say that using a HRM is useful for what ever you do.0

There's a bunch of threads that cover this. But coming from someone who just retired their Polar F6 HRM after 650 workouts, I would look into a Motoactv fitness trainer as this is everything you need or want at the gym. HRM, bluetooth MP3 and FM radio, pedometer, calorie counter.
Motoactv is what I got for Christmas and I love it!!!0 -
