What are some ways I can keep myself motivated? I keep feeling like it's taking soooooooo long to get where I want to be, that why bother? I have seen some improvement on the scale, but it just doesn't seem like enough. Any help would be appreciated. :indifferent:

As the saying goes...you didn't gain the weight overnight and it's not going to come off overnight. Start looking at this as a lifestyle change rather than a diet. Diets usually only last so long and then you are back at your old habits and end up gaining the weight back. Start making better food choices, gradually add it some exercise and then bump it up when you aren't getting the results you want. But giving up will get you nowhere except back where you were.
For me the weight comes off SO slowly that I can't focus on that anymore. My new lifestyle is that I eat clean 80-90% of the time, go to boot camp three days a week, and try to run whenever I can. It just so happens that I am also losing weight at the same time and that's just an added plus.
Don't get me wrong. I get frustrated that it doesn't come off as quickly as some other's. And sometimes the scale reads the same number for months. But I will get there eventually IF I keep plugging along with my new lifestyle.
Good luck!!!0 -
Why bother? Really? Do you want this? If you do, you have to work for it.
If you've seen some improvements, then you're getting there.0 -
When I get discouraged and want to give up, I think of this...
Time is going to pass no matter what I do. I can either track my calories and exercise and slowly lose weight, even if it's a half a pound a week, that's still 26 pounds a year. Or I can do nothing (like I have for years) and stay the same weight and be miserable because of my size, or even gain weight. Do I want to be 26 pounds lighter at this time next year, or do I want to be the same weight, or even bigger? Thinking about that works almost every time. When it doesn't, I take a good look at my "fat" pics, that generally kicks my butt in gear0 -
It's gross, but I like to google x lbs of fat when I feel like I'm not making progress. Visualizing what I've lost is pretty helpful for me.0

Why does it matter how quickly you get "there?"
"There" doesn't really exist. Once you arrive at your goal weight, you still have to log, make healthy choices and work out to maintain your loss and level of fitness.
Unless you're committed to doing this FOREVER, you will lose some, quit, gain it all back and then be faced with doing it all again. That's why successful people make small, healthy, permanent, sustainable lifestyle changes.0 -
10 lbs is a lot of work to give up. Find an activity that you like and add it to your day/week. I started to do jiu jitsu almost a year ago. I take it one day at a time and celebrate the small achievements and they turn into large ones. I realized today that I have been going to the gym in the morning before work for two years this month. Wow!! Two Years!!! It has not hurt my life at all. it has helped more than I realize some days. An idea is think of something you want to do and set it as a goal. Take the small steps to get there and get it done.0

Go to the store.
Pick up a 10lb sack of potatoes.
Feel how heavy it is.
That's how much weight you have lost.
Why would you want to quit?0 -
how long is sooooooo long?0

Patience grasshopper0

You poor thing.0

Rejoice in your little victories. The big changes you want aren't going to come fast no matter what you do, so look for the small signs that you're headed in the right direction.0
-
hmmmm... i had totally different ideas cause i thought it was about something else completely... oh well.0

Why bother? The time is going to pass anyway. Why not pass it becoming fitter and healthier. I started January 2012...now it's January 2013, and LOOK 75 pounds are gone!! Don't you want to be much lighter come January 2014???0

If you can't motivate yourself, what makes you thing anyone else can? You really gotta want it and if you seriously want it, then no one will stop you.0
-
Persistence is the key. If you give up now, you will be in exactly the same place or worse a year from now. But if you remain persistent, then a year from now, you will be in a much better place.0

Everybody's got something that will light that motivation fire. You just have to find it. What started you on this journey originally? Is that motivation still true, or do you need to find something else?0

F**king, get remarried!0

Seriously? It says you joined 2 weeks ago...0 -
Damn, thought this was yet another "HE/SHE CHEATED" post.
OP, if the two weeks and apparent ten pounds you've lost on the scale isn't enough for you... take pictures. Measure yourself. Buy calipers. Etc. These are all indications of fat loss that often get ignored in favor of the one number on the scale. There will be times when clothes fit better, you look smaller, but the scale has not budged. It will happen, and if you're this annoyed with your progress now, imagine how you feel if you're NOT tracking other things.0 -
Eat at a deficit, Train more, rinse repeat.
Do you really think anyone loses 90+ lbs in less than a month? You've been here since Jan 2013 and you want to quit already?
the ONLY person that motivates you is you.
so.
what are you waiting for?0 -
I think of something I want to do when I get to my goal weight. When I get down I will think about how I want to make a 50's style pin up calender of myself for 2014. or when I reach the 25lbs mark I will start taking pole dancing classes not for anyone else just for me0

Did you get fat overnight?0

Motivation comes and goes.
[After a Carnival Cruise commercial] "I'm going to get in shape so I can wear a swimsuit on the cruise. Yea me!"
[Looks outside and notices it's windy and cool] "I don't feel like working out today. It's too cold and windy."
[Gets home and sees bag of cookies on the counter] " I'll start next week" Nom nom nom
Dedication is forever!
[After a Carnival Cruise commercial] "I'm going to get in shape so I can wear a swimsuit on the cruise. Yea me!"
[Looks outside and notices it's windy and cool] "I don't feel like working out today or eating good. Stupid wind!" - Puts on running shoes... goes for a run.
[Gets home and sees bag of cookies on the counter] "I can have a few this weekend but not today." ...eats healthy snack.
Don't do what you feel like doing. Do what you know you should be doing. That is all.0 -
I am going to assume that you are here because of a resolution.
It is normal to be re-evaluating after a couple weeks! In fact, it is average to give up after a couple weeks!
Do you want to be normal or average?0 -
I know !!!!
I hates when that happens.0 -
Keeping yourself healthy will not only reduce your risk of landing up in the hospital for ailments but it will also make you a happier person keeping your endorphin levels raised. Do it for yourself not that for the fact that you have to be skinny or a certain size but that your body is your temple and you only get ONE life with it. Treat it well and it will treat you well back.
To keep myself motivated I look at websites with quotes and pictures...I'm visually motivated so I tend to visit sites with women who weight lift or eat healthy, etc.0 -
Motivation comes from within. Set more intermittent goals that still require effort. By achieving, your motivation will only continue to grow0
-
Try something new or create a workout calendar. I have the same problem! I can't even follow through with the 30-day shred because I get bored on day 15-16. lol0

it's not a given that everyone who tries to lose weight knows about MFP. I tried for years (with varying levels of seriousness and success) before buckling down and finding MFP.
I think there are probably multiple people in this boat - and I think this guy has been trying for a while and maybe came here to find that motivation, or community, or whatever.
at least that is what i am choosing to believe until told otherwise.0 -
Didn't feel like reading all the responses. But it all comes down to if you really want this. You have to WANT it for yourself. As far as motivation, I set short term goals or do programs like the Couch 2 5 k. I'm currently in my second go through of that, and want to continue on to do a 10k. It has helped me tremendously and gives me something to aim for. Get a group of friends together that want to lose weight and have a challenge...But in the end, it's your body. No one can force you to do something you don't really want to do. Good luck!0
