This thread is too new. I'll come back in a year. It will still be topical. :flowerforyou:

When is a thread to old to bump? Use search before starting a new thread. Use sticky notes. Use quote button so it is in box. Don't keep quoting the same quotes.

Perhaps someone should write and post a list of etiquette rules. Oh wait! let me search to see if that has been done!

Interesting experiment I just ran (or possibly just interesting to me). I think threads do disappear after there are 50 pages of threads when you search. I ran a search for 1200 and it only pulled up 50 pages worth of search, oldest one from 3 months ago, and we all know that topic has been debated/discussed since the beginning of time.

It needs to be bumped, repeatedly.

    Me, too. *sigh*

Stupid man has been sick for a week, though.

Have at it, Scubaboard has a ton of good ones.

It works well on the "My Mother is sabatoging me" threads.

Bump an old thread: Get accused of forum necromancy.

Start a new thread: Get told to use the search function.

    Solution: Ignore wankers.

I notice this also. I think if it is a thread about useful information to the person bumping (and especially if they are new) it will go over better than to start a new thread. I usually do a search before I post. And if it is relevant I will post on the old thread. Such as if it is about hair care, makeup application, women with muscles, or other chit chat stuff.

Also sometimes (if it is a personal issue) the OP actually bumps it themselves and none of us even realize that she/he was actually the one that bumped it (months later).

Sometimes bumping old threads is useful. Sometimes it's a minor annoyance. Either way, I see no need to get all in a bad mood over it (that just bumps it more anyway). Either way people are going to get grumpy. But, most of the time they get over it, if you don't engage with them in it more than necessary to give a simple explanation for why you posted on it.

I just thought of another reason people bump old threads: because it was an issue they thought about some more.

It makes no sense, especially since many times it's the same users that chastise others for not using the search function, which returns old and new posts.

    I agree.

    Most of the time.

However, once in a while, a new user (typically) will dredge up a very old thread where someone asked something very specific to them, or very time sensitive, and answer it.
By now the originator of the thread either knows the answer or is gone. There's no point.

Like: quick, how hot do I need a roast to be (from 9 months ago)....to me that's unnecessary necroposting.

But yes, by and large, I agree.

Another caveat: spambots will often dredge up dead threads and copy/paste a reply from the past... (and embed their spam).

Or worse, says, "Why are you still complaining about this?" on a six month dead post.

When the new thread starts from the old thread will it have the same title? Or will it just carry on and on from the old title?

Should the title be refreshed to make it more up to date, in say, a couple of years?

Do people keep asking the same question under the same title and adding bits of a new question?

Wouldn`t it be easier to just ask a new question, ahhh I get ya!

We should all just go bump a bunch of old posts, so we can piss people off!
