Workout Duration Question

So I'm finally getting back into the gym and it feels really good. Really really good.

I like the elliptical, but I get bored after about 15-20 minutes. There are tvs, I have an iPod, but I just get bored. Usually I hop off the elliptical and continue with working out by walk/jogging on the treadmill/track for a bit. My total workout time is usually 30 minutes not including warm-up/cool-down..

Does it matter that I'm not doing 30 straight minutes of sweating? Or is the total the important thing?

Thanks!!

  • For cardio vascular health you should be getting 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise spread over three to five days a week. Doesn't really matter how you break it up.

Not giving yourself a break is important for other fitness goals (cardio endurance for running ...), but doesn't' really matter when it comes to burning calories or cardio health.

I would recommend pushing yourself to work longer than 30 minutes at least one day a week. Try to work yourself up to a full hour.

Thanks for the reply - my goal is to work up to 45 minutes 5 days/week and eventually incorporate weights.
