Foods you've swapped

I know some people have replaced rice in their diet with quinoa - what foods have you swapped to either lower calories or increase nutrition?

    Greek yogurt for sour cream
    Olive Oil spray for the pourable
    honey for sugar
    just to name a few
  • Iv always liked caulifour but Iv fallen in love with it now. I substitute it for potatoes and rice. :-) steam and mash or whizz fresh florettes up in a blender until rice like and microwave for 5mins. I add a little butter (5g) and lemon. So good :-)

    Sorry to go a little OT but what does quinoa taste like? Rice or barley or something else? Do you eat it plain as is or always mix it with something? Thanks, I'm intrigued! But afraid to screw it up lol.
  • I swap mashed cauliflower or roasted sweet potatoes for potatoes
    I swap roasted spaghetti squash "noodles" for regular spaghetti/pasta
    I swap vegetarian minced "beef" for ground beef
    I swap unsweetened, fortified almond milk for milk
    I don't normally eat carbs in the evening, but quinoa is a great swap for rice

    I've also been making chunky monkey protein shakes to swap for any sweet thing when I get a sugar craving:
    1/2 banana
    1 scoop chocolate protein whey isolate powder
    1 tbsp. all natural peanut butter
    1 cup unsweetened almond milk

    Tastes like a milkshake! YUM

    None.. that I can think of..I may have added more items to my menu but can't say I swapped out anything.

    I'm trying to eliminate gluten from my diet. I really like the gluten free brown rice pasta from Trader Joe's. I also use Tamari sauce instead of soy sauce (can't taste any difference). I also recently started buying Morning Star Original Sausage patties, they taste really good!

    Quinoa is similar consistency to rice. It's actually a seed and is very high in protein, but since it resembles rice, many use it as a "grain". You will ALWAYS want to rise off quinAs before use. It has a coating that is very bitter. Add it to chicken broth and simmer until it's light and fluffy. Its pretty plain, so you will want to season it, like you would rice, or add it to a casserole, etc. Its good!

    Greek yogurt for regular yogurts (on a regular basis, but not always).
    if i am treating myself i freeze the regular yoplait yogurts (whipped style) cups and eat them as ice cream.

    What about when you're craving something sweet - I saw swap honey for sugar, any other ideas?

    Also, I have a bunch of old fashioned recipes that are yummo, but they have a stick of butter in them, so I haven't made them for years. A lot of the flavour comes from the butter. What would be the healthiest thing to substitute? (I've had people suggest various oils and also suggest in those cases you'd need a lot less volume than a full stick of butter.)

    White rice with brown or quinoa
    Potatoes with sweet potatoes
    Sugar with stevia
    Coffee with green tea

    Still learning a lot, I want to try cauliflower mashed up like potatoes. Also trying bake my own snacks instead of buying them.
