It works way better (for me) to juice the kale first and add the juice to a smoothie (or just make a juice).. I dont like the texture that just blending the kale adds

Why do all of these people think you're supposed to eat kale? That stuff was designed as a garnish, it was never meant for human consumption. Do you also eat the umbrella that comes in your Mai Tai? No. Leave the kale on the side of the plate. Eat stuff that tastes good.

I use fresh kale. Cut off the thicker stems because they dont blend well. You cannot taste Kale in the smoothie.

I like the taste of Kale. Steamed or raw in salads. Good stuff!

  • I would try Spinach first. My sister has a food dehydrator and I''ve had her kale chip and they''re pretty darn good.

Kale rocks! i strip the stems out when using full leaf but it its the chopped-in-a-bag kind, i just throw a few fistfuls in the blender, pulling out the coarsest stems. let the blender handle the rest!
Its also super easy to grow, and very pretty in the garden. If everyone grew a tub of kale and a tub of swiss chard we'd go a long way to eradicating hunger.

Don't believe sjohnny-he just wants all the kale for himself! ;-)

Y'all have all been duped by the propaganda of the garnish industry as a whole and Big Kale specifically. I weep for the future.
  • I have a kale smoothie every day. I use one cup of fresh shredded kale (I remove any of the tough middle stems), 1/2 banana, 1 kiwi (without skin), 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder and 1 cup unsweetened almond milk. I find if you don't blend it well enough the texture can be a bit weird, so you have to really blast it. The fibre in kale is awesome, I have a smoothie mid-morning and it keeps me super full until lunch. The taste is a bit stronger than spinach, but it depends on what you're blending it with! Blueberries and kiwis I find are the best fruits to help counter-act the slightly bitter taste of the kale. :-)
  • Tried it for the last few days and really liked it. I could not taste it at all in my smoothie! :) and I do feel like it kept me more full feeling! Thanks everyone!

I use Spinach. ..Chop and Squeeze as much as i can into 1 cup, add 1 banana, 1/2 Mango and a good 1/2 - 3/4 cup of mixed berries. (Blueberry, Blackberry ect), 1/2 - 1 Cup of pineapple juice, and Blend.

If you get the right amount of berries in there it turns purple. Way better than looking into a Green glass imo.

Tastes soooo good, fills me up and keeps me alert. An awesome breki on the run to the work site.

This reminds me, i need to restock on my greens......

I use kale and spinach every day in my breakfast smoothie. It may not be for everyone but I am seeing a significant improvement in my digestion and overall health. Any greens are good. No negativity please.

i love kale, and put it in my protein shake every day. I don't do anything special, just rip off a few hunks, throw it in, let the blender do the work

Kale is just so amazing. It's a perfect food. :)

Kale and foods with Omega 3's are baffling...why does something so good for you taste SO bad?

It took a little convincing for me to try it, but it works well in smoothies. I like berries and it's a good combo. The kale is not overpowering at all.

After reading about people having kale in their smoothies I checked it out side by side to spinach. I have been drinking spinach smoothies for months. Next shopping trip I will be looking for kale.

Totally with ya - kale is not food! (Neither is pumpkin, but that's a story for another thread.) I do however, make lots of smoothies with spinach. For a refreshing change of pace (and to gross out your coworkers just a little less), try using frozen cauliflower as a base.

I break off the biggest part of the stem and stuff the rest into my vitamix raw. It blends up just fine. I also like collard greens, spinach, bok choy or swiss chard. So many greens to choose from! You can apparently do dandelion greens from your yard but I haven't gotten that brave (desperate?) yet.

???? Rainbow trout and eggs taste so good (not together). It's the short chain omega-3s that are mank, ground flaxseeds are an efficient way to ruin all kinds of breakfast foods.

Some ppl crack me up. Do you honestly think everything we eat was designed to be a food, but if you enjoy eating it and it works for you then why the heck not? I love kale in salads and there is a recipe for lasagna rollups that uses kale that is amazing!

I just rip off a couple handfulls and drop 'em in the blender with whatever else I'm putting into the smoothie. Can't taste it at all. Spinach is good too.

psh. i love ground flaxseed in my steel cut oats, along with chia seeds.

I find that kale blends and tastes best in a smoothie if the accompanying fruit is pinapple, peach, etc. The darker berries mix with the green veggies and the result turns a bit brownish. It still tastes great, of course, but the color is off-putting. A nice, bright smoothie with kale, yogurt, pinapple, and a bit of lemon juice is quite nice and pretty. I do trim off the stems, because they don't blend well. Don't go overboard trying to pack too much green veggie into one smoothie, my blender couldn't handle it and the result was a mass of half-pulverized greens clogged around the blades.

I also recommend you try chard in place of kale. It is incredibly nutritious, has a milder flavor, and both the stems and leaves are edible and blend better. They also have more color variety.
