time vs intensity

When you are starting to exercise is it better for weight loss to go at a slower pace on a treadmil and stay on there longer or more intense for shorter period of time???

I am going to go ahead and say it because I know a lot of people are going to. It's best to add in weight training as that really helps with overall fitness/weight loss goals. As for cardio, it depends on your goals and the time you have available. Are you training for a long distance event? Longer times at a good pace is the way to go. If you are simply doing it for the calorie burn, do interval training--hills and/or speed. That has been shown to be a better calorie burn.
  • high intensity intervals with resistance forcing the heart rate to at least 80% of maximum and rest periods allowing heart rate to drop to 65% - so time and intensity they are not opposed.

If you stay on a treadmill for 2 hours and work your heart at 45-55% then calorie burn maybe the same as short intensity but that is not looking at the full physiological effect to the body.

just go with whatever you are most likely to stick with and that won;t annoy you enough to stop in the beginning.

i personally find the higher intensity workouts to be funner and really dislike the moderate intensity/longer workouts
