Varicose veins and spider veins

Hi, I'm a 26 year old female who's always been overweight. I have always had jobs where Ive worked on my feet for long periods of time and about 4 years ago I started developing spider veins and varicose veins slowly but steadily.
I have been so embarrassed by the look of the varicose veins that I haven't worn shorts in over 4 years now and its only getting worse even though I'm losing weight!
I have seen a doctor about treatments but my insurance would not cover the cost even though the varicose veins cause me pain and RLS.
Does anyone else have this problem or can relate to me in any way? or have any advice or home remedies that have worked for them at all in the past?
I'm really proud of my weight loss so far and Id hate to hide my legs at all this summer... Thanks!

  • Hi linz0saur,

I read your post on Varicose Veins and decided to reply...I happen to work for a vascular surgeon who specializes in Varicose and Spider veins... I noticed you said you have "always been over weight" and that "even though I'm losing weight!" you are still developing the veins more and more. I wanted to direct you to an article my boss wrote on just that issue....http://www.weknowveins.com/downloads/FHCN-Spring2011.pdf the doctor has written countless other articles as well which can be found on his website page http://www.weknowveins.com/in-the-press.php. The point is to offer you some background on the issue and some hope...After you have read a bit you can go to eveinscreening.com which Dr. Magnant developed to help patients who live no where near his small practice. He can point you in the right direction for a physician in your area that has the same qualification he does in the area of superficial leg veins. No he doesn't gain anything from any of this, it is just his passion to help people with vein disease (which you do in fact have if you have bulging varicose veins or spider veins that reach below your knee) and you may find that your weight struggle is actually attributed to poor vein health in your legs, not you just being over weight. You certainly appear to be a lovely young girl and at 26 you shouldn't have to live with this for the rest of forever. And YES vein disease causes RLS as well. That info can be found on the eveinscreening.com site as well under associated diseases. Unfortunately there are no "home remedies". You will need to first heal the veins you have trouble with now, lose the weight and maintain a healthy exercise regime to keep them as far away as possible, but even those preventative things may not completely cure you, if you are prone to weak veins. Hope this helps! Warm regards, Brittany
