Good weight for 5'9 disabled man?

So, obviously I'm not a man, but I'm asking for my Dad, because I can't find any good info online.

My Dad is 59 years old right now, and stands about 5 feet 9 inches (lol). He's also disabled (can walk, but it's very difficult) so he can't exercise much, but he does take a walk every morning with our dog. he's also large framed.
Since he can't exercise and is older, what would be a good weight suggestion for him? Most sites say about 159-175, but 175 seems too low.
He weighs about 225 right now.

Any help would be great.

  • 91% of men are 5'9.5" and only 17% are over 5'10", your dad is completely average in height. 175 is not unreasonable, depending on muscle mass.

I'm 5'9.5" and shooting for 190, but I also lift daily. If I had little/no muscle I would want to be 170 for my height.
  • He does have some muscle, from playing a lot of sports for years. But he can't lift anymore. Also, since he is big boned 170 would just look scary on him.
  • Maybe try the higher option offered then? Some larger framed people are built solidly underneath their fat, and getting him down to 190 and seeing if he wants to continue to lose after that is a good idea. As he loses weight, he should probably see a doctor regularly in intervals to make sure that he isn't straining himself or losing too quickly for his body to be happy.

Since he can't lift very much, maybe get him some light resistance bands or a theraband (it's an orange-stretchy-thing) for him to try to work out with with little resistance and low impact.
