Sushi - Please help :/

My son came home with 4 Salmon and Avocado rolls, and said "Try this for Dinner. Super healthy" .

Being the super health nut he is, i didn't question anything and nom nom them down.

Then came time to add them to my diary :/

I didn't weigh them, i don't even know if what i had were classed as 3 pieces or 12 or 16. Ive never had Sushi before. :/

Im totally confused and beginning to fret a little.

If someone could help me that would be great.

The only info i can give is there were 4 Salmon and Avocado Rolls in White rice, and some Soy sauce.

Each piece was about 9cm x 3cm.

I think ive made a massive boo boo

If anything, i think the rice is gonna be the killer.

Any help is appreciated.

Just estimate the amount of rice, salmon, and avocado, and the sea weed wrap. It's not so bad.

    Really!

When it says pieces its a roll cut up into usually 6 or 8/9 pieces depending on the roll. Salmon and Avocado is pretty good, a lot of healthy fats. The rice might be the killer depending on what else you had today.. I like to get sashimi ( which is just the pieces of fish by themselves) or try and get brown rice with my rolls. You usually get high calories when anything is tempura(fried), crunchy or spicy( they use mayo for the spiciness) Sushi is good though! Don't be so hard on yourself, log it in. Then you can know how much you went over and work it in for the rest of the week. Trying new foods is fun!

I log the generic versions... but youre right, avacado and rice are high calorie. For a typical day of sushi for me I log 1 roll (4-6 pieces) unless it's under 300 calories then I will log 1.5.. Check out sushifaq.com for some 'typical' rolls and go from there.

an avocado roll is like 150 calories. they're not big and they only have about 4-5 slices of avocado in each roll. sometimes less.

I ate some 2 rolls yesterday, 2 rolls today. they're not bad for you, I know what i'm talking about.

A sushi roll looks like a log of rice (or rice stuffed into seaweed if it isn't an inside-out roll) before it is cut into pieces. You had the pieces, not 4 entire rolls most likely. I estimate that each piece usually has around 1-1.5 Tblsp. of cooked rice, but it's hard to say because the amount of rice and the size of the rolls can vary from restaurant to restaurant. That being said, 4 pieces of a roll will not have a "killer" amount of rice in it, don't fret.

Avocado and salmon ARE healthy foods, but they are also higher in fat so you just have to keep that in mind if you're trying to fit certain macros and your calorie intake.

I hope you enjoyed trying sushi, it's my favourite food

Thanks for all the replies so far.

So just to clarify, roughly a 9cm roll is classed as say 6 pieces? lol, if I'm right ive been a bit of a sushi piggy and should read up on sushi etiquette.

So since i had 4 :blushing: thats 24 pieces?...sorry think im gonna cry.

I just checked. Fresh Sushi - Salmon and Avarcardo Roll - 24 pieces 1214 Calories. :frown:

OMG..wheres that kid of mine...

Noooooo, a 9cm roll would be 2-3 pieces at the absolute max, and that depends how wide the roll is.
Basically (in New Zealand) our pieces come already sliced and they are approx 60mm/2.3" across, and 25mm/1" high. These are pretty much 50cals each. I have recently started buying it unsliced and half a roll is the exact equivalent of 4 pieces, so 200cals.

Yeah, 9 cm is about half the length of a regular roll, so you ate the equivalent of two regular rolls. The estimates in the database range from 210-300 calories per roll, so figure you had at an absolute most 600 calories.

I've just noticed you're in Aus - I now know the 9cm pieces you're talking about. They're the type they sell in the shopping mall food court standing on end looking all tempting, yes?
If so they're really quite small in diameter so stop panicking, lol. They would be 100cal each (that's what I've always counted them as when holidaying in Melb). I'd say your dinner has 'cost' you 400cals all up, and look on the bright side - the stress you've put yourself through has probably burnt it all off already!

Ahhhhhh. Thanks yuckdah. Sounds much better. Lol, im sitting here thinking, "How thin do they slice these damn rolls to make 24 pieces:laugh:

3 is much better. So 12 all up 607 calories.

Still not great, but you only learn from making mistakes.

    Thanks everyone. :drinker:

*kitten* I'm a *kitten* - I've only this second noticed that you said, in your first post, that they were 3cm across. Geesh, I really need to read things entirely before I reply!
But it does confirm what I said above ^ - you've only eaten 400cals. It's all good.

Sushi is in rolls or pieces. 9cm is like 3.5 inches so that's really a 1/3-1/2 roll about 3-5 pieces so enter accordingly. I think you overestimated. In the dbase is; Sushi Salmon - Salmon & Avocado Roll. I'd enter 4 pieces for each 9cm roll. The fat is good, Omega 3's. So it's not all bad... I love Sushi...

It's even better news - the 3.5" roll was only 1" wide (they make it small in Australia, lol) - so equivalent to 2 pieces of 'normal' size sushi.

Now I want sushi. I know what I'm making this weekend.

It's a healthy, balanced meal and even if it put you over your cals for the day at least you'll know for next time.

You can also use brown rice or Quinoa instead of white rice when making your own!

Honestly, you seem to be making this far more complicated than it is. Just estimate all the ingredients and add a few more cals on top for good measure, there you go!

Besides, one day of not measuring everything accurately isnt going to kill you

    Hi..

They sound like hand rolls made by Sushi Sushi. They are in the MFP database as I eat them as well :)

If you search under sushi hand roll (2 words for hand roll) you should find something similiar to be able to add to your diary.
