Max. heartrate and Insanity workout question

I am in week four of the insanity workout and my heartrate is still shooting up to my supposed max heartrate of around 180ish . My question is this, is it ok for me to workout to the point where my HR will spike that high, and if so how long is it safe to keep it there before it goes pop?

It won't pop... and if you're hitting 180bpm, your max HR is actually higher than that. Just keep working. If you're light headed or dizzy I'd back off, but I care little about what an HRM says.

I'll be interested in seeing the responses you get. Although I don't do Insanity, my HR is up at my "max" or very close to for almost the entire duration of my workouts. I feel fine during the workouts. I don't feel like I'm going to keel over or anything, but have often wondered what you asked. Thanks!

    Yes and it won't pop.

When I run I go over my max heartrate. Its supposed to be 170, my HRM goes up to 190 at times! Not sure if that is safe or no.

Good question and I'm experiencing the same thing with Insanity. Like jacksonpt said, I don't worry about it unless I start to get light headed. Then I take a break and wait until my HR gets under 160 before starting up again. Typically during insanity workouts my HR is up around 176-178 with a max of 181-182 but typically only in spikes. Pushing yourself (safely) is what Insanity is all about, right?

    ^^^I agree!

If you can still live and breathe after the workout you are doing just fine lol Especially after 4 weeks if you aren't experiencing any noticeable health issues I say keep up the good work!

This is the same for me. If I'm REALLY pushing, I'll hit the 181-82 mark. For the person saying their entire workout is at their "max." What's your "max?" There's no way you can do an entire workout at 178-182.
  • Thanks, never even gave this a second thought when I was a kid, but you hear of people in there 40's and 50's dropping from working the pumper too hard. Just want to make sure I'm doing good not harm.
