Freezing food

Tax time is coming up and my husband and I have been wanting a freezer for extra storage for frozen food. I would like to be able to make soups and freeze them for later meals for on the go for working. Or sometimes we have leftovers for dinner (not often) and I would like to save them for dinners at work. What's the safest way to freeze cook food and prevent freezer burn. I am thinking that food wouldn't be stored for months on end but maybe weeks.
I think this idea could help me get more out of my groceries since I would have some space.
