Sugar Cravings

Any suggestions on what to do or anything that will help with sugar cravings? My weakest moments are at night. I need help. :(

a square of dark chocolate works for me but it's not always sweet. A few berries would be good as they're not too high in sugar but they are still sweet. Or a good quality protein shake.

A protein shake, an apple, almonds, water, tea; don't have cookies in the house (at least I can't have any around).

What does your sugar intake look like now?

Your mileage may vary, but I found that after I Stopped Eating Sugar I no longer experienced the intense cravings for sweets that I always did when I Ate Sugar Occasionally.

Also, a spoonful of peanut butter or a serving of almonds can stave off a lot of food cravings (of course if you are carefully restricting fat, that might not be what you want at the end of the day).

Other than that... mindfulness meditation? With any craving, your physiology is short-circuiting your logic; practicing mindfulness (bringing your non-judgmental attention to your bodily sensations, including hunger, the breath, or whatever) can help reassert your functioning mind. It's not a magic bullet though, especially if you're experiencing a real physiological jones for something.

Low-fat lemon greek yogurt topped with half a banana and a tablespoon of sweetened shredded coconut...it's delicious and makes you feel like you're on vacation..
  • apple cinnamon rice cakes which are about 50 calories and if you have the extra calories to spare top with peanut butter..I find it yummy and it gets rid of my sweet craving

a square of dark chocolate works for me but it's not always sweet.

I like a square of Lindt 90% Cocoa Supreme Dark. It's not very sweet so no one else in the house wants to eat it so it doesn't disappear unless I'm the one eating it.

I've found since I have cut most sugar out of my eating (ie pretty much anything that isn't in a whole food) that a square of this chocolate tastes better than I remember chocolate tasting.
  • I just suffered through this craving tonight! Not a sweet thing in the house except for my husband  I fell back on the fiber bars I put in my kids' lunchboxes (Kellogg's Fiber Bars with chocolate chips). Not a bad choice if you've got 120 calories in the bank for the day and the extra fiber never hurts.

I also like diet root beer. I'm not a soda drinker generally - they all taste too sweet for me, but nothing beats a small glass of root beer for a sugar fix.
