The best way to answer this question is to consult your doctor. If you're a normal, healthy adult the default MFP setting is probably fine.

More than 500mg and less than 1800mg is generally considered optimal

My mom is on a low salt diet and she has less than 2000 mg per day.

I wish I could keep my sodium that low. DV is 2,400; I have hypertension so I try to keep it between 1,500 and 2,000 mg. I'm usually closer to 2,000 mg. Average American consumes 3,400 or thereabouts. One thing you really want to pay attention to, even more than sodium intake is your ratio of sodium to pottasium...most people are very high sodium and low on their potassium...usually very low. I shoot for 4,700 mg of potassium to help balance me out.

I have mine set at 2500mg per day (MFP default). I am over that every day though even though I try to watch it :ohwell:
