Gestational Diabetes (or just Diabetes)

This past week I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and am having to check my blood sugar 4 times a day. I'm having difficulty finding some meal ideas.

Anyone dealing with diabetes that has some input and meal ideas?

Thanks!

I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy. One thing I found helpful was to think in terms of having protein and calcium at each sitting. ( so for example, my evening snack was a piece of lean ham and a cube of cheese.).
I also ate tons of steamed veggies with nothing on them!

Did they offer to send you to a class? I found it very helpful.

My wife had GD and my dad has type II. Check out eatingwell.com and they have radio buttons for certain health conditions and will bring up a ton of recipes that fit that particular health condition. It was a life saver with my wife and now I get a ton of recipes from there anyways.

In general, watch your carbs, and particularly sugar. In that RE, just steer clear of refined sugars and foods that have a lot of refined sugar. My dad can have fruit in moderation, but he has to watch it. Steer clear of white breads, rices, etc that have been heavily processed to the point that most of their nutrients (particularly fiber) have been processed out.

If possible, see if you can get referred to a dietitian or a class...my wife went to a class when she was diagnosed.

Try to watch what kind of carbohydrates you are eating. I sat through a class with my dad when he was first diagnosed with diabetes. Stick to more complex carbs from whole wheat/grain sources. White/ Starchy carbs turn into sugar. Avoid anything made with white flour
