what is a pre-workout small snack?

i get up early in a morning to do Gillian's workout dvd, i feel starving when i wake up and feel i need something before the dvd but don't really want my breakfast that early as knowing me i will then be hungry after and crave food.

I usually just have a pear before my workout but it is just sugar - am i better having something non-sugary?

Find what works best for you. Try different things. My family of runners is horrified by what I consider pre-run food. They'd be sick as dogs if they ate what I eat.

For me something light and carb filled like a banana will have me sick all day if I try to work out on just that. But some people are fine.

Bananas. The potassium is great, the sugar is great, and they sit well on your stomach during the workout.

I usually eat half a banana or a graham cracker (or about 10 of my kids little graham cracker snacks). I've also hear applesauce is good pre-workout.

See? I tried that once and I was dizzy all day even though I did my longest run ever that day. What works for one person might be awful for someone else!

As others mentioned it's different for everyone so you may need some trial and error. When I have a very early workout I sometimes just have coffee but if I'm lifting I have a protein shake first and that usally sits well and keeps me full enough. If it's a little later then I have oatmeal and banana.
