I generally do not eat back my exercise calories, but I have a fitbit, which adds calories for my steps. I figure if I didn't have this device, I wouldn't get "credit" for that exercise. But I also have my calories set appropriately (not too low) and my exercise is moderate. I think if I did strenuous exercise and/or felt hungry or weak, I would eat my calories back.

I don't eat back mine either. But I don't b/c what's the point of exercising if you are going to eat back what you burned off? Doesn't make sense to me. I know there is some science behind it but I'm not in danger of wasting away any time soon!

You're body needs you to eat back those calories so that it can recover. If you are at to much of a calorie deficit, your metabolism will slow down.

The point is the calorie deficit your body needs to lose weight is already factored into your daily calorie goal on MFP. By not eating your exercise calories you are exceeding what you need to do to lose the projected amount of weight you selected (.5/1/1.5 lbs per week). Eating them doesn't "defeat the purpose" because you are better fueled and have more room to fit in things you love, lowering your chances of burning out completely or binging.

Yeah, I eat mine back. This is a topic that has been beaten with a broom till it is bruised and bloody. Do what is best for you. If not eating the calories back works for you then do it. I eat mine back and it is working for me. But, I know a lot of people who set a calorie goal to 1500 ish and don't eat back calories and are doing fine. Let your body tell you what it needs. If it is hungry eat, if not then don't.

I eat them, always have. This has never slowed my weight loss and I'm never hungry.

I eat 2000 calories per day, and I've lost 43 pounds.

I'm from the Eat More to Lose More camp, though :)

I do if I am hungry. Just my opinion and my choice :) Good Luck with your goals
  • If I am hungry then I eat them. If I am not hungry then I don't. More often than not, I am hungry and do eat them!! Lol But I really see no need to make yourself eat if you are not hungry! That is what works for me though! Everyone is different! :flowerforyou:
  • If your not eating at least some back you may end up below the min 1200 limit which can put your body into starvation mode and keep you from losing weight. I eat mine most times since my MFP is already set to account for my calorie deficit.

For me, getting to eat the calories back encourages me to exercise way more than I ever would otherwise, so I love that part of MFP!

If you think the sole point of exercising is to burn calories during the workout you are either misinformed or are exercising incorrectly.

^^^^^ Yup. To not eat them back is to lose muscle and short circuit your metabolism. Unless you are eating a shyte ton of calories, then, by all means, do not eat them back.
