how much muscle had you gained from doing Gillian Michael's workout dvd? I have been doing it for 12 days now and haven't lost any weight but wondering if i've gained any muscle or is it too early for muscle to be developing?

As you are eating at a calorie deficit, you won't be gaining muscle. You need to be eating more calories than your are burning through the day in order to gain either muscle or fat. There are rare cases where people can gain a little muscle on a calorie deficit, especially if they are obese, but that's unlikely to happen from a Jillian Michaels DVD, at least the ones I've seen. They are not really the kind of workouts that are optimal for muscle building. You may well gain some strength though, without actually gaining muscle mass.

I may be being thick here but what do you mean by calorie deficit?

Eating less than you burn. Not eating less than you burn in exercise, but eating less than you burn all through the day. If your body maintains its weight at 2000 calories, then if you eat 1900, or 1500, or 1200, you are eating at a calorie deficit (and will lose). If you eat 2100, or 2500, you are eating at a calorie surplus (and will gain).
