It was recently recommended to me to start taking a supplement, Omega 3 Fish Oil. Can anyone weigh in on this? I was informed that by taking Omega 3 it would help give me good fat which in turn will help me lose more weight. You have to eat healthy fat to lose weight. A difficult concept for me. I appreciate your comments and wondering if this is something you are doing. Hope everyone is working hard and enjoying their weekends.

Omega 3 is a great supplement. It will help your arteries and it will help your joints, its also a good source of healthy fats but I cant see how it would help you lose weight.
I take Omega 3s regularly for arthritis and would be far worse without them
However, please ensure that you take a pharmaceutical grade oil, some of them have impurities.
All the best from Enfland.0 -
It has lots of other benefits that outweigh the gram or so of fat. I don't think it will help you loose weight, but it is a great source of fat. It's one of those things that is recommended by experts as something every adult should do.0

Very good for you, but you don't have to supplement to get it if you eat seafood. Wild Alaskan Salmon in particular is a great natural source.0

Hopefully I don't bore you with some scientific info...
Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid (humans need it but can not synthesize it, it must be injested). Among other things, it helps metabolism.
Don't get too caught up in the word "fat" here, it's chemically very different than other types of fat and is processed by your body differently.
Also, it is becoming quite common for foods to be fortified with Omega 3 so a supplement may not be necessary.0 -

Are you not eating oily fish anyway? They are a great source of protein, vitamins (including D) and minerals not just omega-3s. If you are concerned about the grams of fat purchase a triple strength product - the one I have has 550mg of DHA and EPA per 1g of fish oil so I only need to take a few grams a day to get a high dose.
The human research is in the early stages/ ongoing so some may note that I tend to use words like link and suggest with reference to weight management. Various mechanisms are proposed - reducing the inflammatory component of obesity, adjusting brain chemistry/ manipulating hormones for satiety or changes in appetite, balancing out/ negating the effects of omega-6s which have been linked to negative effects in weight management. Metabolism is no different to any other system or function in the body, it's all mediated by hormones and other chemical signals. These fatty acids are not simply fat they are more like vitamins and minerals and they are classed by dieticians and nutritionists as essential. They have numerous roles in the body and are incorporated into many cells and chemicals, can and do manipulate the function of cells and hormones.
Tons of stuff on PubMed for anyone who wants to search http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/0 -
