Turning on your core

My husband and I have started doing Insanity together which is absolutely awesome!!

Though, my husband loves playing sports, he's never been the gym or gym classes kind of guy, so he doesn't really understand the term "turn your core on".

I have tried very hard to explain this to him but he still has no concept of how to do it, does anyone have any ideas of how to explain this to him??

Is that Insanity terminology? I've never heard "turn your core on" before. I can tighten my core, flex and/or use those muscles, but not sure about turning them on.....

I imagine if I turned the core off I would either
    A) lose all muscle control above my hips, resulting in a flailing torso/upper body
    B) turn the engine off in my car?

Is there a switch somewhere that makes this possible?

I did Insanity. Shaun T uses the phrase to mean engaging all the muscles in your core. Maybe try getting him into a plank so he can see what that feels like.

If you mean he is having problems when T says "keep your core tight", tell him to pay attention to how his stomach muscles feel when he laughs. He can even fake laugh to get an idea what it feels like to tighten or activate the core muscles.

I used to have an instructor say "cinch up your inner corset". I guess the mental visual helped.

my sister did insanity. I watched :)

It sounded to me similiar to what I'm taught in physical therapy. They told me " keep your belly button and below pinned to your spine"

Maybe to 'turn your core on' you have to play some sensual music and give it a little massage?!

Neither do I. What is this phrase?

Switch? I would describe it as more of a button

A "hot topic," if you will.

OP-The answer is to tell him to engage his abs.

Sean T explains it in a podcast but he basically says, laugh, the tightness you feel during laughter is the contraction of your abs this is what you need to be replicating as you work out. Clench the stomach/ab muscles and hold while focusing on your form over your speed.

dunno if this will let me link it but here we go http://www.teambeachbody.com/connect/message-boards/-/message_boards/message/179294069

I usually start with a glass of wine...then tell my core sweet things that I love about it. Lightly brush my core's neck with my lips, and softly mmmm in its ear.

Thanks jelr, that's exactly what I was looking for.

I can demonstrate it to him, but couldn't seem to explain it in a way that he could replicate.

Yeah, that's the way that I have heard it, and while it makes sense to those of us that have been exposed to this kind of training before, it's totally foreign to other people.

    Thanks for your response. :)

Thanks for your response, I did try telling him this, but it still didn't make sense to him.

That's exactly what I did, and while he understood what I meant when he was in the plank position, he couldn't seem to replicate it in standing... -- Thanks for your response.

I sincerely hope her husband doesn't understand what this means. I certainly don't

Tell him to tighten up like somebody's about to punch him in the gut. That should give him the mental picture.
