This guy has it all layed out. Long read but worth it.0 -
I lost my amount on 1200 calories a day since September 2012, I'm now in maintenance & can't eat anymore than 1300 ish tops0
-
I upped mine from the recommended 1200 to 1390 and have been losing a lb per week and not feeling hungry or deprived.0
-
I plateau-d for 6 months on 1200 calories. I upped to 1600ish, and cut back exercise time, while increasing intensity, and started losing weight again. I get so hungry now, I have no idea how I was surviving on 1200!!0

I was on a 1200 calorie diet because thats what my doctor told me to do, did that for about 6 months lost 65 Lbs and have "stalled" for the last 3 months. I say stall because I am losing inches/size in clothes still but my scale says it doesnt want to move
I have up my calories to 14-1600 a day depending on what I am doing for the day and I have started to lose again slowly. I think I will continue to up my calories until I see no loss for a while then know thats my caloric intake0 -

Insert 3 months and that was me!
I had 30 pounds to lose (female, 5'7") and did my best losing in the 1400-1500 calorie range and eating some exercise calories back (I am now maintaining)0 -

Sorry in advance for this long response! I wanted to share my personal story:
When I first started loosing the weight I was at 160 lbs, I'm 4' 10'' so for my petite stature 160 is a lot of weight.
I ate 1200 calories a day and exercised between 4-6 days a week.
I lost 20 pounds in 4 1/2 months which is roughly 1 pound lost per week.
Then I went into maintaining mode because 140 lbs was my initial weight loss goal.
I started up on the weight loss track again this past summer and went back down to 1200 calories a day.
I also exercised pretty much everyday.
This time around from (June 1st - December 1st) I only lost 10 pounds.
I was only loosing 1 1/2ish pounds per month and I'm pretty sure at least 2-3 months in there I plateaued.
I took a break for the holidays to indulge because I was pretty irritated at how slow the weight was coming off, part of me wondered if it was because I lost a bunch of weight before.
So, January 1st I started loosing again I upped my calorie intake just a little to 1390 calories per day and I'm working out at least 5 or 6 days a week, if not everyday.
I've already lost 5 pounds!
My theory is that if you've already lost a bunch of weight it's better to up your calorie intake. I think to start the lower your calorie intake the better but after awhile I just feel you need to change up your calorie intake and your workouts to keep your body surprised and avoid the dreaded plateau.
That's just me!
(Again, sorry for the long post!)0 -
I am losing consistently on 1380 calories. 1200 is just too little0

I completely agree with this My story is quite similar.0 -
I have been able to eat about 1200 calories.. i have a hard time eating more than that unless i make bad food choices..
My goal is to be healthy for life.. so as i change i'm sure that will go up..
I'm 5 10 and female, so I can't imagine 1200 is enough for life.. but you have to start somewhere.. and since I was way under that initally.. I think i'm making good progress.
Anyway.. i'm never hungry and i haven't gotten sick again. Even on the weeks when the scale doesn't move, the pants get bigger and I feel better and I got a good bill of health from my doctrs. So i'm doing something right.
I think it's a good goal to start at if you're not eating enough or most of your calories come from junk, then you have to experiement with different levels to discover how much you actually need to eat. I get to 1300 and I feel stuffed, over full. Even on exercise days. I know eventually it'll be good for me to get there.. but hitting that 1200 mark right now is a victory by itself.
Of course.. when I exercise I net way less then that.. but it's still better then netting negative like I was initally. Baby steps right?0 -
I don't eat the same amount of calories every day, but I lost while eating about 1600 on average. I am currenlty maintaining on an average of 1900 total calories.
Whether eating more will help you lose more depends on several things, most importantly what you are currently eating and what type of workouts you do.0
