understanding MFP calorie goal

Ok, if I used MFP's guided method of finding my calorie goal, it gives me a number. Then, when I enter in my exercise calories burned, it increases the daily goal. So, if I log exercise, I should eat that increased number, right? If I don't exercise, I should eat the original number it give me, right?
And either way, I'll STILL be at an appropriate deficit?
Just trying to understand how this works. I've logged food for a couple weeks, but haven't started to log exercise. And I'm getting confused by a few threads I've read.
