Hi everyone!
Anyone know a good way to estimate the calories burned doing 90 minutes of Bikram yoga?? I couldnt find a choice similar in MFP's cardio lists.
Thanks!

Someone posted this link awhile back:

I usually estimate about 600 per 90 min.0 -
excellent and awesome! I tried using the "yoga" in cardio and knew I had to be working harder than it suggested.0
-
Sure!
You're doing great!!!0 -
I do hot yoga too and I estimate its 600 calories in 90 minutes and 400 calories in 60 minutes.0

I tried to use my heart rate monitor tonight but I was too sweaty for it to maintain a signal.0

Thanks so much ladies - on the topic of heart rate monitors - any suggestions? I'm in the market but I'm such a flake about committing to one.0

Polar FT4 or FT7. You can see the specs at http://www.polarusa.com/us-en and compare the two, then go on Amazon and find the best deal.0 -
I have the FT4 and it is wonderful. It works great while swimming, so moisture doesn't seem to make the signal weaker. And price-wise, it isn't too bad.0

I just got the Garmin FR70. I chose it over a Polar because it wirelessly synchs with your computer to have a record of your workouts.0

nje444 - A 90-minute Bikram class can burn between 700 - 1000 calories - I always use the conservative 700 (b/c personally I think Bikram is pushing it when they say 1000) - depends on how hot, how hard you work etc. Good luck!0

there was a thread on here a while back about both hot yoga and bikram not actually burning those high estimates when using heart rate monitors. if i remember correctly, most of the people who used hrm's found 75 min hot yoga classes burned around 300-400 calories.
i do hot yoga (baptiste power vinyasa) 3x a week and usually figure i burn 350 calories each. one of these days i'll get myself a monitor and check it out!0 -
A readout from a HRM in Bikram is unreliable because the calorie burn is based on average heart rate and although your heart is beating faster in Bikram, a lot of that will be the body trying to cool the core down and not due to working harder, so the calorie burn given is false.
Your Bikram burn is likely to be nearer a Vinyasa Flow Yoga session - about 400 calories for 75 minutes.
Sorry - but there's no point kidding yourself!0 -

I heard you hold the poses longer too in hot yoga
depends on the type of hot yoga - in power or flow classes there's almost no holding of poses. it's moving the whole time.
try it some time - it's addictive!0 -
Hi everyone! Thanks for all your comments. I was estimating on the low end - 500 cals for 90 minutes. I just got my HRM in the mail today so I may try it in class on Sunday just to see what happens.0
-
600 in 90 min seems about right to me as well0

I wore my HRM to yoga the other day (I got the Polar FT4) and it said I burned 458. I'm 5'3, 119. Compared to these comments, it seemed low, but then again I really have no idea.0
