How much sugar to eat?

So my MFP thing says that 28 grams of sugar is what I should be eating. I find it super hard to eat such a low amount. My breakfast smoothie alone is already 20-25 grams of sugar. I usually eat 40-50 grams of sugar a day and I always go over my limit but is it good or no? I honestly think that 28 grams is way too low for me, but how much should one person eat?
