Fasting

Lent begins in just over a couple of weeks & I'm worried about fasting & what my calorie deficit will mean both in terms of weight loss and general health while exercising. Any tips people?

Don't fast. It isn't healthy for you now. Aren't you allowed to not fast when it wouldn't be healthy? Give up something you love instead- like Chocolate.

It's not fasting as such though is it, traditionally Christians would abstain from things such as meat, fish, fats and milky foods so you could easily follow a basically vegan diet without severely restricting your diet.

Fasting is perfectly acceptable. Go to leangains.com

You can fast for up to 24 hours without any adverse health issues or even muscle loss.
  • I just got done fasting and I was about 700 calories under everyday. Since I was so low under my daily allotted amount of calories, I never worked out.
  • I almost forgot....I lost 9 lbs, so you can still lose weight.....I was on the Daniel fast

I am assuming by your statement of Lent, you are of the Roman Rite. I am a Byzantine (Ruthenian Rite) Catholic. In addition to the Great Fast (i.e. Lent), we also have Meatfare and Cheesefare weeks. I feel I can help you in your struggle.

I feel what you are experiencing is fear and letting the "lental fast" become the scapegoat. As you begin your lental journey and practice the fast, focus on becoming closer to your god and strive not to let your "fear" cloud your mind. Ask yourself why are you letting this fear cloud your mind.

Have no fear, losing weight is important to me but I would rather gain weight and still fast. I will be fasting no matter what.

There's absolutely no problem with that and it actually has benefits like increased lifespan, improved insulin sensitivity, and increased mental alertness. I only eat between 7pm and 11pm every day. I even work out fasted. I've gained muscle AND lost fat (at the same time) doing this. If anything, this is better for you than eating three meals a day.
