Recovery Drinks

Hey guys, I'm really super ignorant when it comes to recovery drinks, and after doing some google searches, I've found that I'm just as lost about the topic as I was when I started.

Few questions:
1) When should you have a recovery drink (after every workout? how long afterwards?)
2) Is chocolate milk a good substitute as a recovery drink or not?
3) What is your favorite and most budget-friendly recovery drink?

Thanks in advance guys/gals.

post workout you need protein & carbs. i'm not a huge fan of chocolate milk because of the amount of processed sugar in it. i do p90x in the evenings and always have a protein shake afterwards-i like PlantFusion Vanilla Bean protein powder (amazon.com usually has a 2 lb tub for about $30) mixed with light plain soy milk and i also have an apple to get some healthy carbs in. If i'm like crazy hungry, i'll also have a low fat string cheese.

Cool, thanks! I read somewhere online that protein shakes aren't the best if you're trying to cut/tone up. Is there any merit to that?

I was using protein and carbs too as a post workout but since I've found MYOBUILD... I only use that... I'm never sore it's simply amazing and there's no protein and no carbs.... So weirds... Won many awards etc....

    Amazing product.

I don't say to use it but... I've been taking it for a long time now and I see very good results with it...

Caveat: my experience is based on running, and I'm not sure how it translates to other workouts. I have a recovery drink if I run more than an hour, or more than 45 minutes if I feel wiped out. Chocolate milk is excellent--it has what's considered the best ratio of carbs to protein. This time of year, I have it as hot chocolate. The ideal window for a recovery drink is within 30 minutes after you stop exercising.

Some info from the University of Texas here: http://www.utexas.edu/news/2011/06/22/milk_studies/

if they have a lot of processed sugar, then they're not good for you but i've been using them to tone up after a tough workout for a while now and am happy with the results. its best to consume a recovery drink/meal within 30 minutes of working out. i suggest going to either a fancy-schmancy grocery store like earthfare of a health food store to see if they have the single serving packets to try before you buy a big huge tub to make sure you like it.

Thanks for all the insight everyone! Super helpful! Gonna try out a packet or two of what you're suggesting, Meaghan, but leaning towards chocolate milk as of now since it seems super comparable, and considerably cheaper (and likely more tasty).
