Avocados?

I LOVE avocados and I know they provide many wonderful health benefits but they are also high in calories. Do avocados, when eaten regularly, provide a fat burning quality? I've always heard that the fat contained is a "good" fat as opposed to a "bad" fat. Can someone explain to me the pros and cons of avocados?

Thanks a bunch! ;)

I don't think they are good for burning fat, but they are good for overall health. Specifically, they're good for your heart, cholesterol level and potentially to prevent some types of cancer.

I love them. When I'm low on my fat intake for the day, they are a happy way to balance it out! I love it mashed up with green onions, cilantro, lime juice... I'll use that instead of mayo to make a chicken salad sandwich.

Sprinkle some lemon or lime juice on the cut avacado and it will keep it from going brown for a couple of days.

High in fat, but high in good, heart-healty fat (monounsaturated). If I remember correctly (too lazy to actually look it up), they found in an experiment that dieters that ate avocado instead of a mix of complex carbs (everything else was a liquid supplement) they lost more weight even though they ate the same # of cals.

Good source of fiber, potassium, and vitamins C,K, folate, and B6.

Oh and I agree. A definite pro is that they are absolutely delicious!

To eat only 1/2 and not get brown, I keep the pit in and sprinkle with lemon juice, wrap with saran wrap. Check out this amazing recipe (you really don't need all of the oil, I've found)

I may just have to start having avocado sandwiches since a half of one runs about as many calories as my veggie burgers. I love avocado WAY more! :)

Thanks for all of the great responses! ;)

I LOVE avocados as well. I actually eat one a day (1/2 in morning & 1/2 @ lunch). In regards to fat burning, read this ~~> http://bkcreative.hubpages.com/hub/Rev-Up-Your-Metabolism-with-Avocado

I have found that avocados actually help with keeping my hunger at bay and I'm all for any benefits they have to offer me.

It's possible I've eaten more home made guac in my life than anyone on the planet. If this is not true, I'd like to meet the individual who surpasses and start an avocado collective.

160 calories per avocado half doesn't seem like bad freight to me considering the nutrition it provides and the feeling of fullness you get. When I enter my bulk phase it will be regular guacamole for me. I do stick to baked chips. Processed but not that bad. If you're not too annoyed with WebMD here's a link:

Ha, I have that every single day with my lunch, don't really know why it would need oil though, i just put salt on it. So delicious!

    This^^^

Good fats don't do anything in RE to fat burning...they're simply good for the heart and help the body control blood cholesterol...i.e lower LDL and raise HDL.

They do pack a caloric punch which is why I almost always suggest them for people having difficulty meeting their calorie goals...nutrient dense and calorie dense = WINNING

You can drizzle it in lime juice, and they can keep from going brown for days!
  • I eat at least 1/2 and avocado on most days. When I'm feeling frisky I eat a whole one and I'm still losing weight/getting leaner.

As long as you're eating healthy, whole foods and staying within a caloric deficit eating an avocado will not hurt your progress.

There is nothing "fat burning" about any food really. Avocados are not that high in calories when you consider how filling they are. I like to use them as a substitute for mayo. also acovados blended up with some lemon and spices makes a wonderful creamy salad dressing

Agreed ^_^. I also think it's beneficiary filling up on whole foods rather than eating something 'low fat' or 'low calorie' and later feeling like you've deprived yourself.
    I want an avocado meow.

I usually eat 1/2 an avocado a day. Sure, it is a lot of calories, but they are packed with nutrients, and make my salads kick a#$.
