Gout = No Protein

Hi All,

I was just told by my Doctor that I have gout. Blood test to confirm. My problem is that I do not have any of the common triggers. I already do not eat red meat, and I haven't for years. I do not drink. I don't eat fish, though I should. Literally nothing in my diet falls in the list of triggers with the exception of turkey and chicken.

My Dr. Recommended that I do not eat anything high in protein for the next 10-15 days until this particular attack subsides. No meat of any kind, no beans, nuts, eggs etc.

My question is this... What on earth am I supposed to eat if I can not eat protein? I know fruits and veggies and of course I can eat Carbs, (oh boy!) but what am I going to eat??? Maybe I am just being closed minded, which is why I am asking for advice. Anything you can contribute would be extremely appreciated! Thanks so much in advance!

    IMO ask for a referral to as registered dietician rather than asking unqualified strangers on a forum. If you are avoiding beans and lentils on protein grounds you are also going to be severely limited on dairy, if you are avoiding beans and lentils due to the purines you may still be able to have dairy. http://www.ukgoutsociety.org/docs/2009FinalDietsheet.pdf

    Thank you for your information. I called to make an appointment with a nutritionalist but they will not be able to see me until next Monday unless they receive a cancellation. I was hoping for some advice from others who have had this condition in the meantime. I was preferring not to starve myself until Monday when I can find out some more information.
  • Interesting situation - since I used to have gout worse than anyone I've ever met, I can say there is a lot more to getting gout . . . and getting over it, than just monitoring uric acid.

    The kidneys regulate the pH of the body chemistry right? Gout is a very acidic inner body condition right? You've got gout? You're kidneys are working as well as they used to . . . at least temporarily.

    Do stuff to neutralize the acidity; celery, cherries, bananas. Baking soda is the fastest way to deal with the problem. Apple cider vinegar is next.

    Purines turn into uric acid . . . but purines don't just come from high protein foods . . . they are also made in the cells of our bodies.

    Gout is not a food allergy - think of all the things that could be interrupting you kidney and liver function; stress, toxic environmental chemicals, poor breathing/oxygenation, dehydration . . . stuff like that.

    Good luck

    Please see a registered dietician unless nutritionist is a protected title in your country and so the person you hope to see has at least an honours degree in nutrition, dietetics or a closely related medical discipline - it is not in some countries so the qualifications and quality of service is highly variable.
  • Do you drink enough water? I have gout myself, (red meat and shellfish are problems for me). I was on allopurinol for a couple years, but when my girlfriend moved in, I virtually eliminated red meat (shellfish was only a very occasional food anyway) and I've been off it for 6 months and have had no attacks.

    I found if i was dehydrated from exertion, I knew an attack was coming. ensure you are peeing more or less clear, and you should reduce the severity and duration of attacks.

    He said nothing high in protein, not no protein at all. Veggies, fruits...(the ones you can eat)
