I have been struggling with losing and gaining the same few pounds for months ( it's been over 3 months) . I was 178 at one point but now am up to 189. I eat within my calories. I exercise daily. I still have close to 40 pounds to lose. No matter what I do I cannot lose past 185. I am going to try gluten free as my dietician suggested.
I am beyond frustrated here.

You can also take a diet break by setting your account to maintain and not exercise for a week and two. After that come back and set a smaller per week weight goal. Also try to replace some carbs with more protein.
What is your workout routine too?0 -
I'm running, walking, weight training and ellitopical. I do push ups and other strength exercises.
I am pretty active over all. MFP allows me only 1540 calories Could this cause my stall. my tdee is about 2800 or so. That's a large deficit.0 -
Inconsistent logging and massive amounts of exercise calories0

Same boat, sistah....sigh.
I have not lost anything since LAST FREAKING JULY!
Before I started on MFP, I lost a good 40 pounds. Since MFP, I have lost another 30 (+/-).
I am 5'8, started at 230 and am down to 160 and want to lose that last 10 to get rid of the back fat and baby pooch that haunts me.
Now nuthin.
I started out by walking/jogging outside. By November, I decided to ramp it up and incorporate weights with the cardio.
I do an hour of cardio, abs and glutes 6 days a week, and alternate arm/leg lifting days.
Nuthin.
Eat more, they cry....so I reset my goals to 1/2 pound/week, which is 1600 cal.
Nuthin.
You are not alone.

Eat your exercise calories.. you enter them to eat them.. or eat at a cut from your TDEE.. too big of a deficit = plateau.0 -
Are you sure your estimates are right? Could you be eating a bit more than you think and/or burning a bit less than you think?0
-
I use a body fit media, heart rate monitor and a pedometer. I think my estimates are correct.
I am inconsistant with logging here, but i log daily at watchfit.com I need to get better about login here. My main reason for not logging much is I'm trying not to be so obsessive.
I have been doing this nearly two years. I know how much I'm consuming usually without logging.0 -

So your calorie expenditure estimates are correct
your intake is correct
Yet you don't lose weight........0 -
Oh, and I may be eating a little more than I think, but much. i typically over eastimate on my food for this reason0

YES, that is what I am saying..
I am looking to see how to get over the plateau now.
I'm almost thinking it's stress as I have been pretty stressed for a long time.0 -
Do you measure/weigh your food?Oh, and I may be eating a little more than I think, but much. i typically over eastimate on my food for this reason0 -
I do not. I do not want to get obcessive..0

I did not know how much I was eating until I started to weigh and measure EVERYTHING I eat. I also choose to eat very healthy. No fried food, lots of veggies and lean meat cuts.0 -

while I definitely get that, I think this is probably the crux of your issue. I'm betting you're eating more than you think.0 -

I would be starving constantly.
If your TDEE is 2800, subtract 15% (i think would be 2380 but check my math) and eat this every day.0 -

This.. if you have a huge deficit, you can prevent weight loss.... i say eat more. And you dont need to weigh food. I never have and never will and i have done fine. If you learn basics you can identify without measurements. I start by buying prepacked meats learn what 6 or 8oz of a certain meat looked like. I am sure some days i under estimate and some i will over estimate.0 -
One thing I've noticed - and I don't care if it's supported by scientific fact or not - is that if I eat a lot of starchy food, even if it fits within my calorie counts, I don't lose much weight. For some odd reason, I'm one of those people who has to avoid starchy food. I've pretty much given up bread and white potatoes for that reason, and I'll only have something like cake, pie, or pastry on a very special occasion.
Maybe the same is true of you?0 -

I wouldn't call measuring food obsessive. Measuring food is about being healthy and knowing how much you eat of things nad being able to accurately track calories that you are eat. I bought a scale, i measure out all of my food and in the end it benefits me. Also, take a look at your tdee and bmr. I got stuck in a weight loss plateau from eating wayyyy toooo little calories. I upped my calories from 1200 to 1600 and i definitely feel better. I started doing this about a week ago, and as of this morning, 2lbs gone!! You need to feed your body enough to keep your metabolism going. When it slows down too much, your body prevents it from getting rid of the fat and instead eats away at the muscle. Its pretty freaky to go from eating what people claim as healthy and upping the calories a lot. It took me about a week to wrap my head around the idea but im happy with it. I'm constantly hungry though which im attributing to my metabolism working as it should. If you do do the tdee formula, just remember you do not have to eat back exercise calories as the tdee number already takes your workouts into account!!!0 -

Re the bold. This is exactly how I've learned different serving sizes. It's not exact but close enough that a .5 ounce or even an ounce isn't going to ruin my whole plan.0
