TDEE and BMR....help?

I was reading some of the posts, and I saw TDEE and BMR being mentioned a couple of times. I've went on to find out that these mean Total Daily Energy Expenditure and Basal Metabolic Rate. For me, the TDEE came out to be 2380 and the BMR is 1613.65. How can I use this information to help with my weight loss? I'm not looking for it to come off quick. I just want to do something I can sustain in the long run.

My two main outlets for exercising is running and swimming. I also like biking, but it's a little harder to do. I do squats, push-ups, sit-ups, and other random body weight base strength training. MFP puts my calories to 1200 a day, but I normally eat closer to 1500 gross calories a day.

Can one combine all this knowledge into one rolled up package to make it work or does it have to be one way or the other?

Take your TDEE, cut 20% and that is how many calorie you should eat every day.
