I dig running and the arc trainer... BUT:
Start in the kitchen with a focus on a calorie deficit.

and for new shoes, go get fitted at a running store. Your feet/legs/back will thank you in the long run.1 -
The best workout is the one you enjoy doing. That way you'll stick with it. For me, that's running and strength training. From my pic it doesn't look like I do weights, because I'm naturally kinda stringy, but I actually lift heavy and I love it. :flowerforyou:0

Running burns a ton of calories, but like jenilla said you need to do something you'll enjoy if you expect to stick with it. Regardless of what type of workout you do, I highly recommend interval training. I'm no expert but I've read tons of articles that say how you get more calorie burn for your buck doing them.
If you're open to non-cardio workouts, there are many people on this site that swear that weightlifting is better for losing weight and changing your body composition than cardio. I do both so I don't have strong opinions either way, just throwing it out there.
I also recommend getting fitted for shoes at a running store. I wear Asics (the Gel Nimbus) and love them.0 -
I like the 30DS which does cardio & strength -- it's 20 minutes a shot, easy to do first thing in the morning and also great for conditioning. You can do other types of exercises in the afternoon/evening if you want to do more. Plus 30DS can be done inside during the winter -- as the temp goes up I'd incorporate the C25K program.0

I run in Brooks and Mizuno. Love both. Great foot support adn durability.
Trogalicious is right. Go the running sotre and get fitted. Your feet, ankles, knees and back are too important.
Remember, as you think about weight loss, no 'one thing' does it. It is the combination for training (weight and cardio) combined with the qty and quality of the food/fuel you consume. Lifestyle matters! Ultimately driving up your BMR to be your own personal fat burning engine. Muscle eats fat best so, while cardio is great, muscel works 24/7/365.
Also, on the cardio path.... if you are going to do it, do it HARD. High Intensity Interval training (HIIT). slogging out 60 minutes on the treadmill is better than watching Oprah but it won't get you to your goals as quickly as, say, 25 minutes with Sean T/Insanity.
Good luck!0 -
Running seems to burn the most calories in the least amount of time. You can save yourself CONSIDERABLE effort and time if you pay attention to what you eat. That's where MFP can help. CrossFit is a great way to stay motivated in the exercise department.0
