Oatmeal protein help

I'm trying to add more protein into my diet. I've read on some of these forums that some of you add protein powder to your oatmeal. I've tried this and get a really gross paste, and tofu like chunks of what I assume is the protein chunkified. What am I doing wrong. I put it in with oatmeal to cook. Should I be putting it in afterward and just mixing it up in the hot oatmeal? Sorry this may sound like I'm totally stupid, but it just doesn't seem to work for me.

Don't cook the protein, stir it in at the end.
  • Not a silly question at all, I struggled at first too when experimenting with my oatmeal and protein intake.

Here's a detailed description of how I make my oats every morning...

    1. Measure out oats (1/3 cup dry oats) with 2/3 cup water
    2. Microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds
    3. Take out oats and put in 1 chopped apple and 3 table spoons of egg whites (can omit egg whites if you want, you dont taste them and its a great way to get extra protein in :P )
    4. Place oats back into microwave for 2 minutes and 30 seconds
    5. Take oats out of microwave and stir in cinnamon, stevia, and 1 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder
    6. Add a tiny splash of almond milk (or whatever milk you prefer)
    7. Let oats sit for about 1 minute
    8. Dig in!

I have found this method makes a stick to your ribs, warm, yummy oatmeal mixture :)
    Hope this helps!

Blend the protein powder and the water together before adding the oats. Also, use about a TBSP (or more, if you prefer) more water.

I add 2 tbs of peanut butter to my oatmeal every morning. I don't even use sugar anymore even when I use sugar-free PB. The PB helps give it sticking power and it's quick and easy. I can't live without oatmeal. I am training for a half marathon and it makes me so hungry and oatmeal has become my go-to meal when I need to feel full.

I use regular (not "quick") oats. I make a batch on the weekend and zap a portion every morning. Without protein it didn't solve my hunger until lunch. I now make it with soy milk instead of water. It will foam up! Use a tall pot. I add apple-pie spices: ground clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Each day I take blueberries from the freezer, zap them in the bowl, add the already-made oatmeal and skim milk, stir, and zap again.

Have you tried adding egg whites to your oatmeal? I make the old fashion oats, about 5 minutes before they are done I add my egg whites, stirring often. It's very creamy, with small chunks of the whites.

Off topic, but reminds me of the time I tried to make hot chocolate with protein powder. So chunky and disgusting!

I can't tolerate most protein powders, but I add sliced almonds and cinnamon to my steel cut oats.

I typically mix 1/4 cup quick-cook oats, a half scoop of vanilla protein powder, and some cinnamon together in a microwaveable mug/bowl. Then I add probably about a half cup water (should be pretty watery at this point), 1 egg white, and mix together well for about 20 seconds. Then I toss about 10 raspberries/blueberries/bit of diced apples in and put in the microwave for about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes, checking periodically so it doesn't explode. :) When done, I mix in a little skim milk.
