So, i'm having surgery next week to fix my deviated septum. My question is should I continue eating at a defecit or eat at maintenance? I cant exercise and i've heard its a miserable recovery. If you were in my position, what would you do?

Personally I would get my physical health and see how you feel. If you are hungry eat at maintenance to let yourself heal. Focus on good and healthy meal choices.0

I would eat at deficit. and make sure I was nutrient rich foods.0

htimsm87: Thats what i was thinking. Will my body need more nutrition to heal?0

I think you should consult your doctor on what he suggests is best for your recovery.0

You need to food to heal so eat at maintenance and as you progress, you can start to back off again.0

I would definitely eat maintenance! I think you will definitely need some extra 'umph' to get itself healed and ready to go again!! And you can still make sure that the food choices you are making are good ones!0

So.... I don't know about surgery, but my ortho told me to eat more when I was recovering from a broken bone. She said that my body was going to be using up energy healing.
I agree with pp who said to focus on eating healthy foods and to listen to your body.0 -
Everybody is a bit different so how your body heals will depend. Always eat healthy and for the first few days don't try and skimp on calories. Then let your body and how you feel decide.0

I would think you just carry on with what you are doing. A deviated septum op is a minor op and won`t affect or be affected by what you eat.
The main thing is to recover from your op and be healthy...don`t worry too much xx0 -
After my husbands surgery they told him no eating at deficit. I personally would go back to maintenance or even a bit above. Your physician can advise you best. Good luck with the surgery, hope you heal quickly0

Bump...I am having surgery in 2 weeks but a different surgery mine is for my gallbladder. I was wondering the same thing, so people have said ill be fine in 2 weeks to be back to normal others have said dont do any lifting at all over 10lbs for 6 months!! I have a 9 month old thats 25lbs thats gonna be hard...so im going to focus on diet untill i feel up to working out I will probably eat as i feel hungry and what my body feels like eating, try to just eat healthy dont worry too much about the calories just worry about recovering I hope your surgery goes well and the recovery isnt too bad!0

Definitely ask your doctor (or perhaps better yet, the nurse in his office. Nurses often know a lot about nutrition, and what to expect after surgery). But I would be inclined to eat a maintenance diet of very nutrtious foods, to help build by body up both before and after surgery. By the way, my husband (now ex) and sister-in-law (NOT now ex, I kept her, lol!) both had surgery for deviated septums when they were in their early twenties. Not to worry, they were fine in no time!0

Thank you all for your help. I think I will talk to my doctor and just plan on eating healthy during recovery.0
