abdominal/back support while working out

Hello I'm trying to get in shape but have problems with both my back and abdomen. I have a small hernia-like area where if I do situps the muscle comes up and over one of my ribs, a large hysterectomy scar and various back issues. I've been cleared to work out but they said to "wear support". I don't relish working out in my expensive Spanx, so do any of you have any suggestions on something fairly breathable that can give me some support? This is not for heavy weightlifting, just to keep "everything in place" as I walk, workout, etc. Their suggestions had bars and that just didn't seem comfortable.
Thanks a bunch.

Exercise is not meant to be detrimental to your well being, therefore stop doing the ever so stupid supine ab exercises if your previous health history is not allowing you to do them. What would you say to someone with a broken spine trying to do supine ab exercises?0
