Protein Drinks

There are so many protein drinks and shakes out there. What do you use and what sets it apart from others. Currently I am drinking the Pure Protein, but no sure that is the best for me. Can use your help. Thank you.

I use a basic whey isolate protein, 82%, usually from Bulk Powders or My Protein (both online). I use these because they are cheap and I am not looking for any additional supplements, just a protein top-up.

I use the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Natural (I dont like artificial sweetners and crap, was the best I could find). The cheap stuff bloated me and gave me horrible gas. I've had no problems with this one.

My all time favorite would have to be Allmax Hexapro. It's a blend so you get a good sense of being full for a while, and the taste is amazing, and it's cold processed in Canada so you know they follow the health rules to the tee and their stuff isn't junk. But the price might be a little out there in retail shops. Still usually cashes down below 1$ per serving tho.

I also have some unsweetened whey isolate, so you basically make that taste like whatever you want (banana and chocolate is a favorite :)) and you can get it in bulk online for not much, but it's not quite as filling. And it doesn't work in cooking at all cuz it's way too dry.

I also tried Dymatize Elite Fusion before, and the taste was whey too sweet (ba dum tss? xD). I had the sucralose taste in my mouth for hours afterwards. I also used prograde before but that was a little too expensive to my taste. Um and I've had a tub of Optimum Gold Nutrition natural. The taste was okayish, but I had a hard time getting through that, too. I don't like splenda, but I'm not a huge fan of stevia either. There was too much of it to my liking. (Hexapro has sucralose in it, but it's one that's been dosed so that it's just sweet enough for me.)

Overall there's a lot of stuff out there that you may or may not like, just look at what your macros should be and choose accordingly. Read reviews on bodybuilding.com or elsewhere, buying online if at all possible is usually cheaper. And don't buy those slimfast/ensure/other generic carb-loaded crap "meal replacement" if you can avoid it. Unless you think you need those processed carbs?

Oh, and stay away from muscle milk strawberry. I had a sample of that at one point and it literally tastes like strawberry medicine. Ugh.

    Hope that helps! :)

MusclePharm Combat Whey Protein, Cookies and cream flavor of course, was recommened to me by a buddy, i have tried the Optimum Nutirtion, Tried the GNC brand, tried a few others over the years, but at the end of the day this one was my favorite, it tasted good, besides that I really dont have much to say about it. (I mean im getting the results I want but not sure if we have the same goals, and I take alot of other stuff so not sure if it just the protein that is doing all the work.) Good luck.

Got convinced by a shop attendant to buy USN's Chocolate Cream flavoured shake as he claimed it was low in carbs and fat with a decent amount of protein. He wasn't wrong about the protein but since shopping around online, I'd realised that actually, for the price I paid, i'd been 'had' (plus, it tastes horrific). I've recently found a much better low carb and fat alternative from TREC nutrition, available in a range of flavours so i'll be trying that soon:

  • I use the Beachbody Shakeology because I truly feel you get what you pay for, this shake is not only a protein drink but it also has your daily intake of necessary vitamins and nutrients with added pre and probiotics for aiding in digesting, it is made with no artificial sweetners or flavors. There are many shakes options out there and you could truly lose your mind trying to read all the reviews, but the only thing you can do is try a few and see how your body reacts to them. Are you looking for something that is just protein or something that is a meal replacement? As an added benefit Shakeology does have the bottom of the bag guarantee, I am not sure others have this. You could use the 30 day supply of Shakeology and if you find you had absolutely no benefit or just didn't like it they guarantee you your money back.
Also, you will need to be on which ever drink you choice for at least a week if not 2 to see or feel the real benefits.

When choosing a protein, in order of importantance:

    - what fits my macro needs
    - what tastes reasonably good
    - what is reasonably priced
    - what is conveniently/readily available?

I have a good shop locally that has good prices on good stuff, so I'm almost always buy Optimum Nutrition stuff, and I always buy from him. Sometimes it's pro complex, some times it's casein, usually it's both. Then I add milk and/or ice cream and/or peanut butter to the shake depending on what I need for macros/cals.
