I am so ashamed of myself. My 50th birthday is in 3 months and I have told myself for the past 5 years I will not be this heavy on my 50th birthday. I had my physical yesterday and my doctor informed me that I am getting borderline diabetic. I HAVE to lose weight starting today or in 6 months time I will have to go for gastric bypass surgery (something I have not wanted to do!). I can lose the weight, heck I have done it every year since I was 21 years old, problem is I lose 40/50 lbs., feel good and go back to my old way of eating, ending up right back here. I LOVE food and am a stress eater what can I say?
OK so knowing everything I need to do, I need motiviation. LOTS of it!! Here we go again for the thousandth time, lets hope this is the last time!

please know that it doesn't matter what happened in the past, you have the ability to change what you're doing now! you can do this!0

You've lost the weight before, but now you have an even better form of motivation...To avoid bypass surgery. You can do it! Ask your doctor, a nutritionist or a Personal Trainer with how you can manage your stress eating. Maybe when you're stress, try cleaning, taking a short walk, doing some jumping jacks, sipping some cold water or if you must munch on something, make it something healthy; like fruit, celery and/or carrot sticks, a small handful of nuts, cucumber slices, etc.
Good luck, you can totally do this!!0 -
Thanks I need the motivation!0

I too have lost and gained last year I lost 50 ponds eating right and going to the gym I went hiking in Shenandoah National Park climbing mountains with my husband (who also lost weight). This past summer we were eating ice cream alot and we gained weight back, I gained back 20lbs and my husband about the same. We never stopped eating right we were not at the gym as much and the ice cream was bad. Soooo here we are again trying to get the weight off. We are planning another hike in May we are going to hike Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah so that is giving me inspiration, we are back at the gym with a trainer I am actually running on the treadmill, I never thought I would be doing that and I plan on running a 5k with my daughter soon. I am 43 my husband is younger he is 35 so the weight comes off a little easier for him. I refuse to get surgery because someone I worked with died from it. My fitness pal does work, make sure you log all of what you eat and start walking it will work. Stay strong i know its hard it's been a battle my whole life. I have about 60 pounds to loose I know I will do it this time and so can you! When you get weak just come on here and read peoples stories we are in the same boat. There are alot of horror stories out there about the surgery, Make eating right fun plan some fun meals good food does not have to be boring and make sure you have good snacks in between meals, don't deprive yourself or you will go back to eating bad. Keep me posted you can do it!!! We all can!0

Try and get some cognitive behaviour therapy, that will help you with the stress eating. Learn to recognise it and develop strategies on how to cope with it. I did that and it has been a real help!0

I would work with a nutritionist or counselor to figure out a way to avoid using food as stress relief. If you have surgery and fall back into your old habits, the surgery won't prevent you from gaining the weight back. I'd hate to see you go through that!
Keep browsing the forums on MFP. There are lots of motivational threads and success stories. If it weren't for MFP, I probably would have slipped up by now.0 -

Surgery isn't the answer. If you don't change your mindset and your relationship with food you will still lose and gain the weight back. I've seen it happen more often than not.
My best advice (worked for the first 100 lbs lost), starting today this is your new and healthy lifestyle. You can eat anything - just in moderation and in real serving sizes - not the giant sizes we have become accustom to. Move your body whenever possible, for as long as possible. Sleep - your body needs rest.
Good luck!0 -
I have 138 pound to lose by next June! You can do this..the past is just that...the past. Focus on the future you, how strong you will be, how much energy you will, how much of stunning 50 year old you will be.
Here is a quote that I have at my desk at work...hits right between the eyes...I look at it everyday!
"If you don't do it! You don't want it bad enough!"
You can do this, we are all here to help keep you motivated and encouraged!!0 -
You can still be healthy and love food. Just love different food than you love now. ;-)
I used to love hamburgers and steak and fries and cake. Now I love chicken and fish and pork and fruits and veggies. I still have a burger or some cake every now and then. I just don't live on it anymore.
Find foods you love that are healthy and this will be easy for you.
Consider seeing a counselor too if you think there may be some underlying issues with the stress that causes you to eat. It's your health and your life. It's worth it.0 -
I agree with the other comments. It will be much easier for you if you have a handle on why you're eating unhealthily and how that need can be met in other ways. Even surgery won't be a long lasting fix if you haven't done that work first.0

Also, nobody can force you to have gastric bypass surgery. If you lose weight by your next appointment, you can continue to lose weight on your own. My doctor tried to pressure me into surgery when I hit 357, and I said, "Nope. Watch me. I can do this without rearranging my insides," and joined MFP later that day. I can't wait to see him in a couple weeks and say, "Told you so."0
