Anyone doing the Mediterranean diet? Walk-at Home DVDs?

Hi everyone,

I started with MFP last week just logging my calories. This week, plan to start logging exercise and check out more areas of this great website. Thought it was time for an introduction.

I'm 52, married almost 20 years, have a daughter who is 10 and a son who is 13 years. I need to lose a lot of weight, but I'm tired of diets. Instead, I decided to change my eating patterns, so I'm using the Mediterranean diet. Anyone else doing it? Mostly vegies, some fruits (for dessert), whole grains, and meats used as a garnish. I have been following the Mediterranean diet for about a week and already feel better. I love tracking the food on MFP -- it helps so much!

Starting exercise this week. Will be using some Walk at Home DVDs (Leslie Sansone). Anyone else use them?

Look forward to meeting others on this journey toward a better life!

Warmly,
Cheryl

I have not even heard of that diet (can't even spell it - lol). Years ago I did the walk-at-home tapes, but I was easily bored. Being from WI (I see you are from IL), it was a good option at the time, especially in the winter. I have been getting up many mornings and doing the biking/walking on my Wii Fit, can't say I burn a lot of calories, but it gets the morning started out on a positive note! Good luck on your journey!

Hi, there! I'm 42, married almost 10 years, with two lovely young sons (5 and 19 months). I didn't follow the Mediterranean diet, but we definitely focused (and still focus) on eating plenty of veggies and fruit, whole grains, and minimal meat. I've used Walk at Home with great success - if you stick with it and work up your intensity, you can go all the way through your weight loss with it. Feel free to add me.
  • Hi all,

I actually do follow the Mediterranean diet - probably because I actually LIVE on the Med, and this is just the way everyone eats! What I love about it is that there is no counting calories, no keeping track of points, or cards, or substitutions...

The diet is mostly plant based, it uses fresh seasonal vegetables and fruits, plus grains, olive oil and garlic. This is an eating plan that adapts is you're a vegetarian, or want to go gluten free, as well as it does for meat lovers.

Physical activity is also just a part of daily life. For example, here in the south of France, where I live, we don't use our car unless we're going somewhere too far to walk to.

I do my shopping at our local, open-air farmer's market it goes organic every Friday and Saturday), and have a little two wheeled cart I use to bring the goodies home in.

If you're interested, my second Mediteranean Diet cookbook just went live - and it's free this weekend - today January 26, and tomorrow January 27 on Amazon. It's called: Mediterranean Diet: Savory and Sweet Mini-Tarts... It's a Kindle deition, so you get immediate access. (And if you don't have a Kindle, you can read it on an iphone, smartphone, ipad or your computer...)

My first cookbook is 'Mediterranean Diet: Sides, Soups and Stews for two" - I wrote it because I become an empty nester this year and we're already tired of eating the same leftovers for three and four days in a row... So I've started adapting my favorite recipes for two - it's not always as easy as cutting the recipe in half, especially where herbs adn spices are concerned!

I'm working on my next cookbook now, which will be classic French recipes - things like 'coq-au-vin (chicken slow cooked in wine), Boef Bourgingon (Beef stew slow cooked in burgundy wine), daub (a stew that can be made using pork or beef - again again, slow cooked in wine...

Did you know that red wine is actually good for you? It can help to cut your risk of heart attacks, and lower your sugar if you're a diabetic.

Anyway, if you've got questions or have tips to share, I'd love to hear from you!

    Warmly,

hello! I did the Mediterranean diet as well as soooo many others. I will say, that one was the absolute best that I have done however the one thing in common with all the diets was, if you dont stick to eating that way the rest of your life, you gain your weight back. I am in my mid 40s and for me personally, diets do not work. I find it hard to eliminate foods and prefer to just eat whatever I can in moderation. Again, that is just my preference- everyone is different. I became overweight becasue I did not know moderation. I came to MFP, learned how to properly portion my foods, I do workout videos ( including the ones you mention, Leslie Sansone) as well as some others and in a few short weeks I have lost pounds and lots of inches. Whatever road you chose to be healthy, I wish you all the best and feel free to add me ( everyone can!) for support as I will always support everyone 100%
  • Hello. Yes, I am familiar with the Mediterranean diet. It is what my doctor recommended for me to keep my cholesterol and weight under control. It is a lifestyle diet, nothing fad about it. It isn't a quick loss eating system either. It's a lifelong way of eating. Not only should most of your food sources be fruits and veggies and whole grains, but the fat should be olive oil, fish sources and milk products. Red wine is also included. Red meats and sweets should be limited. It's a really healthy eating regime.
