The Bane of Modern Life?
I just had a passing thought that seems to make a lot of sense.
The T.V. remote - would we all be in better shape and have less lousy TV to watch if it wasn't around?
If we didn't have it, we'd have to get up to change the channel. A small amount of exercise each time. Changing it repeatedly to find something good would get annoying, so we'd probably give up sooner rather than channel surf for half an hour. Giving up would mean turning it off and doing something, probably something more active than sitting and looking at a TV. Networks would have to respond by making better shows.

Getting rid of the remote might not solve the problems.. . .but it might narrow down the channcel selections to a lovely 12 channels again, and would get rid of a lot of garbage.
If getting rid of the remote gets rid of Honey Boo Boo and other equally awful shows, then I will gladly go door to door collecting these items which is absolutely great exercise.
But, in the mean time, I just cancelled my cable.0 -
Don't need a remote if you don't have cable, definitely.0

Ah, sorry, not about any bane other than the general noun.
<Forum newbie with no idea who the person Bane is>0 -
Oh well not to worry, he's very funny keep an eye out......hello newbie! Xx I'm one too!0

microwave 50-60years ago there was no such thing as having a meal in less than 10 minutes. You had to warm up the oven then cook the meal. Meal prep could be expected to be 45mins or longer. That meant people prepared and ate less food. It's easier to warm up a whole box of hot pockets and eat it all in the time it would have taken you to prepare and heat up a meal. Plus portion sizes were much smaller.0

Just get rid of the TV, and go and live YOUR life instead of watching other peoples.0

I don't have a tv or a car and I love it! You defiantly move more and don't waste time on the tv but there are other things that can distract you *cough cough* MFP...0

Oh thank you for that! I came into this post only to see if there would be some Tom Hardy, and well, there he is!0 -

Nah. I watch a lot of my TV shows on my laptop. Which is in my lap. No need to move there. Expand it to "all technology" and I would agree.0

We can't really call anything a bane of life. Even with some amazing, seductive distractions out there anymore, it's still our choice of how we live.
Think the TV is ruining America? American's don't have to watch.
Think the Internet is ruining America? We don't have to be here as much.
I would much rather be outside hiking, fishing, playing tennis, or working. I try to make that choice as often as possible, but I still get enticed to post on forums, play video games with the boys, or watch a few shows on TV. Again, my choice though.0 -
Nah, I don't buy the OP's theory. She underestimates the awesome apathetic power of the general masses to do nothing, even if it means watching crap on T.V.0

All the remote did was take the excitement away from the kids getting to change the channel manually0

I have an older television that does not have a remote control, so I use the same stick that I bathe myself with to reach the channel and volume buttons.0
