Ever left your HRM on all day?

Has anyone ever left their HRM on all day, out of curiosity? If so, were there any surprises? Or is this a totally stupid idea? :-p

I haven't, no. However, you've piqued my interest in doing so, I think I'll give it a try one of these days.

I'd love to see what my average heart rate is...

It's not a stupid idea at all. I assume what you're trying to do is figure out what you burn over the coarse of a day, right? It's a good curiosity to have about your body.

Unfortunately it's not going to work. HRM's are only fairly accurate for aerobic activity, and pretty inaccurate every other time.

But the good news is, you can get a very good ballpark estimate of your every day calorie burn. It's called TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure), and there are formulas and online calculators to get it. Here is one: http://www.fitnessfrog.com/calculators/tdee-calculator.html

You might also consider a BodyMedia Fit device or a FitBit. Those devices, unlike HRM's, make an attempt to measure overall burn for the day. But doing a TDEE estimate will get you very close.

And once you have TDEE, you hold the key to controlling your weight! :drinker:

I totally thought about this but I think the beeping when youre not in your zone would get fairly annoying.
  • I did once, and the numbers were close enough to my TDEE (taking into account a buffer for the limitations of the HRM) that I am happy using my TDEE instead of feeling like I need to track with the HRM every day. So that's nice!

What he said. HRM's aren't set to be used with anything other that significantly increased heart rates.
