I was so embarrassed today at the gym!

Well I have been really working out hard the last few days and my leg muscles were already pretty sore but I decided to do the treadmill and then the eliptical. I have MS which if I over due it working out due to getting hot or just doing to much it causes it to act up. Well I was really going good and strong and I was starting to feel like my legs were going to give out but I usually can push through it. So my phone rings and I let go of one handle and almost lost my balance so I put the phone down and then ralized it had paused because I almost slowed to a stop. So I tried to get going again and could not get my legs to push it at all to get going. So I decided to just stop and get off. Well my leg gave out and I ended up in a sqaut while still hanging onto the bars and could not stand up!! My legs just had nothing left. So the older guy next to me looks over and he was like are you ok. I am like I just overdid it and he was like YOU THINK! So now I am so scared to do it again! I get so upset when I can't finish a work out cause my leg gives out. I try to push like if I set a goal of 30 minutes on the treadmill and at 25 my leg or legs are done I try so hard to get to the 30 minutes or 45 that I have planned. My husband can hear when I am starting to stumble and yells at me to stop. Anyway it is just sucks and I dont usually complain about much but I hate that I know I can do so much more and push way harder but just cant get it done!

Yikes! That does sound rough. Have you talked with a doctor or a trainer to get a workout plan? They might be able to help you meet your goals without having you push yourself too much. Don't give up though!

    Good luck!

Firstly, I am so sorry to hear you have MS. I know you must get tired of hearing that, but really, you are so young! My mom has MS so I understand what it's like when it's holding you back sometimes, so many times I've seen my mom not be able to do something because of how tired she is and it just kills her that she can't do it.

But, on a another note, congrats on doing what you're doing (and you've lost the weight before, I KNOW you can do it again!) I'm no fitness expert so I don't have any good advice for you, but just be proud of what you're doing and don't be embarrassed. honestly, that guy was probably impressed at how intensely you work!

    best of luck with everything!

edit : I like the idea that some people have mentioned about organizing yourself a workout routine with a doc or trainer. it'd be nice just to kinda know if there's a certain limit or any certain things you should do, you know?

... I really have nothing to say, other than the fact that I am actually crying for you.

My dad got shockingly diagnosed with MS late last year (after they discovered they misdiagnosed him with a stroke) and he's talked about wanting to join me at the gym to develop the strength in his legs. I've done nothing but be supportive, and to hear your story, well, ...

I am just so sorry. Just know that you ARE strong, despite your limitations, and know that the man beside you could have completely ignored you instead of responding to your cues. I really wish I could give you a hug or something.

Sorry you were embarrassed, but keep at it, Learn the signs of when you are near your limit. But definitely seek a doctor or trainer who can give you good direction for exercise.

    definitely this.

And don't be embarassed... the guy who sounded kind of sarcastic should be embarassed. I don't think anyone should push so hard as to injure themselves but pushing hard to challenge limits.. heck ya!!

If I saw someone at the gym work out so hard that their legs gave out, my first thought would be:

"Wow, that chick is hard core. I wonder how she motivates herself to that level."

I too have MS and the hardest thing to do is listen to your body. It took me some time to accept that it was better to stop and rest if I need to, instead of pushing through it like I had always done before I was diagnosed. But once I started listening to my body better I have found that my quality of life has improved.

I can do more, every day stuff and more exercise when I listen to my body. It still pisses me off some times but by listening to my body I can do more.

I totally understand and hope you feel better.

I dont have MS but i do have MG Myasthenia Gravis which is similar. I too have pushed too hard during workouts and done some stupid things. You really have to listen to your body and learn to stop not push through and hurt yourself.

Thank You everyone for your responses. I was daignosed at 25 I could not walk without falling down and had no feeling in my right leg and was numb everywhere for about 6 months then it slowley got better and I began to exercise and eat better and the weight fell off and I was doing really good. Then with my pregnancy the weight came back on very easy. I am so greatful that I have been doing very good since with the exception of when I get the false flare ups due to over doing it and stress. So I am happy that I am able to get on the treadmill even though I cant let go of the bar or I will lose balance and fall thats why I like the treadmill though because I can walk faster then if I just walk outside because I can hold on. If I walk fast without holding on I am all over the place. When I just walk at a normal pace though you would really not be able to tell anything was wrong. I am very thankful for that. I see so many that are worse off than me and I am very thankful. I know I have a long road ahead of me and thats why I want to get the weight off now so I can get around better now and in the future if my legs get bad again I will be better off not having 100 lbs extra to support. I am thinking of trying to add swimming in to my workout from what I saw it looks like it can be a good calorie burn. That way I stay cool and can work harder without worry of overheating. One thing that I have noticed in the last few days is that I can do a video and really get my heart rate up. I did the biggest loser game for the xbox and I am really still feeling it. I cant do that on the treadmill because my legs wont let me go fast enough to get my heart rate going. I have not felt that feeling in a long time. You know the one where you feel like your lungs are on fire. So I am going to try to keep that up. Sorry this was so LONG!!!
